Another analyse position

So what do you guys think…and thank god I have a pic that is not in my garage/living room. Do you think I’m a bit too streched out?

  1. You’re smiling, which means you aren’t working hard enough.
  2. Your head position is sideways, you’re creating extra draft.
  3. Your race number is not flat, more drag.
  4. Put your bottles on your tubes, more aero.
  5. You have two bottles AND a profile setup? Was this an ultra?

John

You are stretched more than 90 degrees, but that’s not necessarily a sin. Are you comfortable?
Obviously you could be more aero if you were lower in front, but that’s not necessarily something you can sustain for your race distance so it’s up to you. Seat height looks great.

Your legs are huge. I’ll bet running is your weak event?

For this season I am going to flip the stem and work on bringing myself lower…see how it feels for 80+ miles. As far as the stretch, do you think that the frame is a tad too big and a slightly smaller frame would help (90mm stem on there right now)?

Running a marathon is not a problem for me (3:29), but the second half of a marathon in IM was rough. It’s pretty funny to watch me scuba with my heavy legs, everyone is floating pretty much horizontal and then there is me…at a 45 degree angle.

Obviously a shorter stem would bring it back, but so would simply shortening your aero extensions. If your arm rests are adjustable you can move them back to keep them under your elbow, but if not you’d end up with them under some portion of your upper arm. That could be uncomfortable for long rides because you’d need some tricep tension to keep the position but at the very least it can be the way you experiment with a shorter reach to see how it feels. If it feels good, then you can get a shorter stem to make the position permanent.

Pads are as far back as you can go, if I slide back on them then my triceps do get tired. I was wondering about the size of the frame just in case I end up swapping out the frame for a new. I may be swapping out the frame anyway (regardless if this one is the exact right size) so that’s why I’m asking if you think that a slightly smaller frame would benefit me here instead of getting a stem that’s less then 90mm. I appreciate the help, thanks.

Well, you don’t have much seatpost showing, nor do you have much drop from seat to bars so you could probably use 1 size smaller.

However, before you mess with your bars, how about messing with your seat position? Move it forward an inch. That will have the affect of decreasing that upper arm angle as well as opening your hip angle. That in conjunction with flipping your stem may make everything better.

  1. clearly you have not read http://www.sharpenson.co.uk/blog/?p=162 because that facial expression is not aerodynamic
  2. see if you can get your number belt lower down on your butt, not on your back
  3. i agree with other posters- if you can handle it, bringing your shoulders down would make a huge difference
  4. remember if your shoulders go down, htey also go forward, so the ride would be shortened some anyway.
  5. i have no idea why the ST mafia is convinced you can get longer reach comfortably…its ALL about hte exact location/width of the elbow pads- i ride very stretched out and am very comfortable in that positoin. MULTIPLE tests show that longer reach positions are faster.
  6. experiment with bringing your hands up a bit and having some slope to your aerobars- some people love it. I do. If you are long legged/armed (which you do not seem to be) it tests significantly faster. On others it seems to be a bit of a wash…

analyse, man, analyse.

analizing is some sort of act that involves making something into an anus.

Got it, no smiling in races…I will adjust my facial expression accordingly! That by the way that page is hilarious!

I’ll play around with it and see if I can get a new pic up…this time maybe in my living room so you guys can critique my furniture as well

Chrissie smiles and she is untouchable. As long as your leading, keep on smiling.

Socks?

Socks?
Ironman, figured worth the 10 seconds (at most). Plus I didn’t need to put on socks for the marathon…so no time penalty.
