Ankle pain while swimming...what is it?

So I was finishing up a set 2 days ago and got this quick shooting pain about 3cm above where the leg joins the ankle on the front of my left leg. It’s a small pain (as opposed to a big throbbing pain) but it is sharp and makes kicking with an force on my left leg near impossible. It only happens when I kick/put pressure on it. I didn’t think much of it as I was just finishing up my set. I went for a couple of runs in between and have been fine until I got back in the pool this afternoon. Immediately I had the same shooting pain and I felt like a limping fish, kicking only with my right leg (which then decided to cramp up on me due to the imbalance I suppose).

Lately, I have been running approx 5-6 miles a day which is not much for me and I just came off of two big bike weeks two weeks ago (300+/week). The only thing that has changed is that my swimming volume has gone up about 50-75% since my bike is currently out of commission for a little. Despite the increase in swimming it’s not like I have trashed my ankles during my swim sessions.

Anyone else have this problem/pain? What have you done about it? Any idea what it is? Could it be from “snapping” my ankles when pushing off the walls hard?

Look down at your ankle while swimming. If there is a grey thing stuck to it that’s a shark. Get rid of it.

-Sorry for being a smartass. I don’t know much about swimming.

Do you do any kicking breaststroke? Some of the breaststrokers on the team I am on do sometimes get a cramp in that area. Though that is very rare, that could be a problem.

I doubt it’s pushing off the wall too hard.

Besides that, it could be something with your running/cycling training/technique and by pointing your foot and applying pressure might trigger the pain.
