So it turns out that sophisticated, evolved Europe is far less happy than we are in America. Despite our knuckledragging. Interesting.

Europe - more smarter than America.
Europe - more smarter than America.
Yeah, that’s what I’m sayin. We’re more dumber and stuff, but who’s most unhappiest?
Geez.
The majorities in Europe don’t believe their lives have improved in the past five years mostly because they haven’t. Ireland is the only Western Europe exception I can think of, but there are probably several Eastern Europe exceptions.
Europe is on a path of demographic self destruction. They can’t replace their own population even with immigration which threatens to swamp their vaunted culture. They are rapidly getting an older population.
Things are not looking good on the Continent. That fact bodes ill for everyone including the US.

Agreed, which is one of the points I’m trying to make. Europe, I think, is suffering from real malaise. Not the Jimmy Carter kind of malaise, either- a real, deep down, dangerous kind of malaise. As much as they love to lord their “vaunted culture” over us young pups here, I think they don’t really believe in it anymore. I think we should all be worried about them. (No smilies, that’s not sarcasm.)
That whole situation is really looking awful. I am expecting some dramatic problems during my lifetime. I never thought that before, but the trends are not good and happening way too fast.
We look even dumber mangling the english language with phrases like “more happier” and “most unhappiest”…kj
.
You misunderstand- my jokes are for my own amusement.

The warmest, poorest and less-educated countries are often the happiest:

We are warmer and less educated than most of Europe, so we are happier … As for why Latin countries are happiest, sunshine and siestas have a lot to do with it too.

And all the while, the rich, well-educated countries look down and sneer at their happiness in derision. Educated, maybe, but not so wise. IMO.

Never would have thought it given their sense of humor

I’m certainly not going to extoll the benefits of our rampant consumerism, but on the other hand, I think the poll results are worth keeping in mind the next time some frog accuses us of being neanderthals because we don’t have universal healthcare and whatnot.
I have to question this study. Are people in America really happier than Europeans or do they just think that they are? I know that sounds like a strange question given that happiness is highly subjective. However, given that the American media are consistently telling us that America is the greatest country on earth, the best place to be, etc. doesn’t it seem reasonable to assume that people would answer the questions more favourably? I wonder, if you could find an objective way of measuring happiness, would the results be the same?
“Are people in America really happier than Europeans or do they just think that they are?”
If you “think” you are happy, you ARE happy. “Happy” is a state of mind and is relative to each individual. There is no “objective” way of measuring happiness.
“However, given that the American media are consistently telling us that America is the greatest country on earth, the best place to be, etc…”
You must be watching a different media than I am watching.

If happiness manifests itself in having a yak sized arse and not bring able to view one’s appendage because of the enormous gut blocking the way then yes, the majority of Americans are happier than those poor emaciated europeans with their thongs and nasty topless bathing habits…
I’m not surprised by the results. Many Europeans I work with are glad they are here in the United States. Some have no plans to go back due to the fact that in most of Europe there is very little for them to go back to…Their economies are in shambles, cost of living too high and no hopes of getting any better.
As a whole individual European countries have lost their sense of identity. Alienated from the rest of the world and no leaders to give them direction or a sense of pride.
It’s a shame. Wonderful part of the world rich with history.

Does their healthcare system pay for “happy” pills?
