I was messing around the web and came across these altitude tents which looked interesting. Anyone have any experience using these? If so, would you mind talking about training protocol (e.g., how long before the race do u use it); different models, tent or just mask, cost, etc.; and results?
Thanks.
My best friend ran with Ryan Hall went he was at Stanford an he told me Ryan would sleep in an altitude tent. Ryan was born and raised at around 7,000 ft above sea level so he was used to it. The whole idea behind the altitude tent is to build more Red blood cells. I remember Alberto Salazar had a Nike Oregon project going on a number of year back. This consisted of a few professional runners living in an house in Oregon that mimicked living at altitude. There has been some information on the benefits on living high and training low. There should be more information on it on the web. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nike_Oregon_Project
Hello Ironboom and All,
This is dated but might be interesting.

I used the tent for a while, around 4-5 weeks I think. It was part of a study, with a couple of runs to “exhaustion” before and after. I think my improvement was “statistically significant”. Normal training with the altitude affect at night (live high-train low). I was a bit of a pain to sleep in, mainly the noise (new ones are a bit quieter), but also very hot in summer!
