Alright, tell me how dumb I am.. (IM 70.3 questions)

Trying to register for my first ‘official’ 70.3 race.

On the active.com registration there are 5 different categories:

Individual Entry

CAT M

CAT P

CAT S

CAT C

All of them are the same price, but I can find no explanation of what (if any) difference there is between them or what the designations might mean. Anyone have some insight here? If it helps, the race is Muncie 70.3. Thanks ST.

No clue what the CAT options mean but I always go with the Individual Entry. Haven’t had any issues yet at a race with it.

you just need the “individual entry”.
THe other categories are for things such as if you bought a multisports.com package or similar.

You want the “Indiv” as it stands for one person/age grouper…Unless you are pro then “P” and “C” means Challenged.

Ok, then another probably dumb question…

Am I going to need to wear my race number (as in, the number you would put on a race belt that will be flapping in the wind) during the bike portion of the race?

yup
.

Yes, typically racers wear them on backside for bike though.

When you pick up ur packet for the race, they will give you two sets of numbers so you can pin one on the front for the run and one on the back for bike though most use one and a race belt and spin the race belt frontside on T2 transition for run.

I can’t wait till you do a long course and ask about the 5 transition bags in long course Ironman racing

Get a race belt, put the number on the belt, move the number to your back. You likely won’t notice it flapping too much.

Haha, thanks for the help everyone.

I think it will be a few years before I make that quantum leap in both training and masochism.

If you’re worried about time in T1 something I’ve picked up from some of my fast friends is to put the race belt and number on under your wetsuit if its a wetsuit legal swim. I usually stuff the number under the back of my tri top and pull it out on the bike. Haven’t had any trouble with the number coming off in the swim or it being damaged by the water.

And I’m not allowed to wear my swimskin?? This is swim is going to suuuuuck…more than usual.

Ask the race director on this one. I always ask and the answer is consistently “no”. As long as your bike and helmet are marked, you don’t need to wear the belt on the bike.

If it’s a WTC 70.3 then you have to wear your # on the bike. Their rule.

what a stigma to have to register as CAT P(ee)…HAHAHHAHAHAHHAH

And I’m not allowed to wear my swimskin?? This is swim is going to suuuuuck…more than usual.

From www.ironmanmuncie.com:

What are the wetsuit restrictions?
Wetsuits cannot measure more than 5 mm thick.Wetsuits are permitted if the water temperature is up to (and including) 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit (24.5 degrees Celsius) or colder.Wetsuits will be prohibited in water temperatures greater than** 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit (28.8 degrees Celsius).Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures between 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit (24.5 degrees Celsius) and 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit (28.8 degrees Celsius) **will not be eligible for awards, including World Championship slots.Full wetsuits are permitted (arms and legs covered). The De Soto Water Rover wetsuit is PROHIBITEDNot sure why you think you’re swimskin wont be allowed.

Because right above that section on the same website is this:

What are the swimwear restrictions?
Swimwear must be 100% textile material, which is defined as materials consisting of natural and/or synthetic, individual and non-consolidated yarns used to constitute a fabric by weaving, knitting and/or braiding. Simply put, this would generally refer to suits made only from nylon or Lycra that do not have any rubberized material such as polyurethane or neoprene. Swimwear must not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend past the knees. Swimwear may contain a zipper. A race kit may be worn underneath swimwear.

I have an older model Xterra Velocity suit, which has the neoprene coating. Definitely don’t have the funds to go out and by a ‘legal’ swimskin after just registering for that race.

So you’re saying that a swim skin will actually provide you that much aid while swimming? Really? A swim skin will make you very marginally faster (and in open water that amount is lessened even more) but wont aid you like a wetsuit.

Don’t stress about the swimskin. It’s really not going to save you that much time. Especially the new ones. Worry more about any pockets on your suit that may be increasing drag in the water. The biggest value in a swimskin to me is that I can wear something over my tri suit that has pockets I keep nutrition in and not have to worry about the extra drag in the water.

Those aren’t dumb questions. A dumb question would be something like “how much does wearing my watch slow me down on the HIM swim if it isn’t wetsuit legal.”

Wait that’s a really important question. Won’t the weight of my Garmin 310xt on my wrist throw off my swim stroke?
