Is anyone out there entered in the Alpha Palm Springs Triathlon October 23. They just changed it to a duathalon because Lake Cahuilla is not available for swimming due to the quagga mussel.

Interesting. The Indian Wells 70.3 is using the same lake. Any idea if it can be cleaned up by December?

Good point Alex. That will be interesting.
Not only am I disappointed because they are not running a triathlon anymore, but they changed it to a run/bike/run and will not give me a refund. They are saying the race was not “canceled†….just changed….and for that reason will not offer full refunds. I understand it’s not their fault, but it’s not mine either. I want my money back!

Not complaining about the race itself……just their business practices. I think you missed my point.

you know, past 2 years many races people signed up for where canceled and people lost their money fully. so be happy you can still do a race.
Yeah curious to see what happens with La Quinta 70.3.

Respectfully…chill. Race doesn’t owe you a refund. This kind of stuff happens all the time. As someone else said, be thankful you’re racing at all and go enjoy it!
There was a discussion somewhere about IM/The Race Director having purchased specific equipment that allows them to race in Lake Cahuilla. Guessing it’s the Chlorine dunk for your wetsuits the day before?

Yes, that’s the protocol. Perhaps this smaller race simply didn’t provide for that mitigation.

On the website, the schedule shows times for wetsuit decontamination for both Friday and Saturday. I remember that they had announced the decontamination protocol for last year’s race as well, so it sounds to me like they were able to do this. I’m guessing that maybe its whoever has jurisdiction over the lake that’s making the call?

Desert Tri (last run in March 2020) had the dunk tanks etc. the equipment as I understand it is on site and available. I do not think IM brings it in.
I’m deferred a few times to LQ, but not doing it.
Got some good news regarding the swim status on the La Quinta 70.3 in December—swim is still on with no plans of anything otherwise!
Today I stopped by the lake and drove the bike course since I’ll be racing in December. I spoke with the gate guard at the lake and asked about the status of the Ironman swim since the swim portion of the race at the end of this month had been canceled and switched to run-bike-run format.
I was told that the Alpha Tri had the swim canceled because of the lack of adequate compliance to the mussel precautions the last few years. I won’t speculate on the details behind it, because I don’t know. But she did specifically say the Ironman LQ race director has been fantastic regarding precautions/protocols/preventative actions regarding the mussel situation and that there isn’t any concern about the Ironman swim moving forward.
Good news to hear because I was a bit concerned after I heard the other tri swim got canceled. I’d be pissed if they made me run twice. I don’t even want to run once!
Bike course is super flat and overall road surfaces seem good to great with lots of long stretches to put your head down and fly—there is one stretch that is about 7.5 miles in a perfectly flat, straight line. The exit to the swim on Jefferson is the only road surface on the bike that was less than ideal.
Looking forward to December!

Alpha win is as good as the previous company who I can’t remember the name of because they only had 5 people per race. They rebranded and didn’t do shit.
Now that said this is normal protocol for every race ever no one is refunding you because they had to switch to a duathlon.
Tsszen,
Thank you for the intel. That’s great news for those entered in the LQ 70.3. I’m with you about running once, let alone twice. Good luck with your race!
I suspected something was fishy… pardon the pun… with the swim being cancelled and, if true, respectfully disagree with anyone who is OK with a business making their problem, mine.
Grantbot21,
Saying normal protocol for every race “ever†is completely untrue. I did my first Ironman in 1986 as well as many other distances. When things changed that were not the athlete’s fault, a refund was given. I know it’s a long time ago, but somewhere along the line it became normal protocol only because people put up with it.

In most cases, I’d agree with the article. However, it sounds like this issue is entirely due to the race director’s negligence. Should there be a refund? Maybe not. Should people avoid these races in the future? Probably, if this is the kind of event they put on.

Negligence? It’s a known issue that comes and goes. Even ironbrand will have issues there

??? Not sure what you’re getting at. I know stay flexible, it’s been that was since I started racing 15 years ago. Sometimes things have to get change you deal with it. I’d never expect a race to refund me.
