Alcohol math question

If I take a canned Gin drink (473 ml @ 5% abv) And add a shot of gin to it (30 ml @ 40% Abv) what is the resulting abv %?

I feel like is easy but my brain isn’t braining.

If I take a canned Gin drink (473 ml @ 5% abv) And add a shot of gin to it (30 ml @ 40% Abv) what is the resulting abv %?

I feel like is easy but my brain isn’t braining.

(473 x .05) x (30 x .4) = 23.65 + 12 = 35.65 ml = add two shots

ETA results in about 7.1% abv

Thanks, makes sense.

I also got 7.1%, so thinking your math checks.

Except for that magical swap of operators

Now a bit more sober after tastings wore off we will fix the math…

Or…

473ml at 5% is 23.65 ml alchol, 30ml at 40% is 12 ml of alchol… combined you have 35.65 ml of alcho and 473+30 = 503 so you now have

35.65ml of alchol in 573 or 35.65/503 = 7.08%

if we go with 2 shots add another 30 ml total and 12 ml of alchol or 47.65/603 = 7.9%

Hopefully you can actually follow the math now and can do this for yourself in the future.

But dont drink and do math…

35.65ml of alchol in 573 or 35.65/573 = 6.2%

if we go with 2 shots add another 30 ml total and 12 ml of alchol or 46.65/603 = 7.7%

Hopefully you can actually follow the math now and can do this for yourself in the future.

35.65 + 12 = 47.65 last time I checked. Do you follow?

ETA I bow to Greg’s clever response

and 473+30 = 573

Does it?

Have another shot…

Why fuck are you drinking canned gin?

Take a martini glass…rinse it with vermouth…add cold gin and a couple of Bleu Cheese olives…39.999999% abv and infinitely better than your crap drink

I’ve noted the date and time, as I cannot believe this:

I agree with you 100%, and without qualification, on each and every point as written.

Yes, I had a few % and bad math loll so 47.65/603= 7.9%

Had 4 or 5 a bit before posting, knew I was taking a chance… LOL

But that’s why I showed the work, easier to find the mistakes…

you like to cosplay as a bartender. I don’t. I like to go to the fridge and get something out. If it needs more alcohol, I’ll add it.

Your ability to consistently distance yourself from words such as ostentatious and pretentious needs to be commended.

Still nope.

When shopping, I apply a couple of metrics I learned from a Running + Drinking Podcast, many years ago (it could’ve been Brew/Drink/Run or some other podcast that they guested on; or maybe from 3 Non Joggers?)

Value: $/Oz. (LOWER is better)
Buzz Factor: Oz. per alcohol/$ (HIGHER is Better)

EXAMPLE 1 (DFH :60) 6-pack of 12 Oz bottles at 6.9% ABV for $10.99
Value: $0.15
Buzz Factor 0.45

EXAMPLE 2 (Coors Light/Bud Light) 30-pack of 12 Oz cans at 4.2% ABV for $24.99
Value: $0.07
Buzz Factor 0.61

recently, I discovered
EXAMPLE 3 (Founders Centennial IPA) 15-pack of 12 Oz cans at 7.2% ABV for $17.99
Value: $0.10
Buzz Factor 0.72

There are lots of other maths applied (how many calories consumed and how much should I run to maintain or burn off) but I’ll not bother with that

Also, Rule #4: no alcohol after 9 o’clock

That’s insulting to bartenders

When I tell people I was a bartender (AND a DJ; in a Strip Club, no less), I’m often welcomed with “Thank you for your service”
