Just curious as to whether old bikes shoes wear out (like running shoes) and how frequently they need to be replaced?
I have a pair of Shimano shoes, which I guess are about 7 years old? Carbon sole, blue and silver, single strap that goes from outside to inside… - not sure that what the model is, I’m afraid. They have been my training AND racing shoes over that time, during which I have done countless sprint and Oly races, 3 HIM’s, 2 IM’s, crit’s and a few longish road races.
Just recently I have found that the soles of my feet are quite tender after a ride, and that my toes are quite sore. I haven’t changed pedals or cleat position, so I was trying to figure out what the problem might be? Could it be that the shoes have given up the ghost and it is time to get a new pair?
Personally I change bike shoes when the uppers are stretched out and let my foot move around inside the shoe or the sole gets flexible. That may be the case with you.
It could be the shoes, 7 years is certainly a long life for bike shoes or it could be that you are pedaling to hard and need to slow down
Heh heh - nice one. Am pretty sure it’s not the speed the shoes are moving at, but maybe the movement within the shoe.
On Sunday I was able to wiggle the toes a fair bit and shift around laterally - the velcro doesn’t hold too well these days, and (on closer inspection) the insole is pretty flattened out.
I had a pair of cheap Sidi shoes with a plastic sole. The sole changed shape over time and started to become uncomfortable so I had to replace them. You may be seeing the same phenomenon, only your carbon held out several years longer than my plastic ones did!
