AG Nationals Swim Temp- too hot?

Wow, ok IF it happens, full or long John?

If you’re in my age group wear the john, if you want to go faster wear the full. Yes, that’s regardless of how awesome a swimmer you are.

It’s an oxbow lake. The river moved during a flood and put Carter Lake on the Nebraska side of the river.
Historyedit]
Carter Lake is the only city in Iowa located west of the Missouri River. This is due to a flood that occurred in March 1877, which redirected the course of the river 1.25 mi (2 km) to the southeast. The remnants of the old river course, called Saratoga Bend, became an oxbow lake, Carter Lake, for which the town is named today.
Soon after the formation of the lake, the site became a flourishing recreational area. It included, “a boathouse at the foot of Locust street, hotels and club houses were numerous and the lake was the scene of many a pleasant rowing and fishing party.”
After extensive litigation between Iowa and Nebraska, in 1892 the Supreme Court of the United States finally ruled that Carter Lake belonged to Iowa in Nebraska v. Iowa, 143 U.S. 359 (1892). Although the general rule is that state boundaries follow gradual changes in the course of a river, the Court ruled that an exception exists when a river avulses one of its bends. In 1972, the Supreme Court made another ruling on the circumstances of Carter Lake when it ruled on a boundary dispute between the two states in Nebraska v. Iowa, 406 U.S. 117 (1972).

Very interesting. Thanks for the information

Current Water Temperature
The current water temperature at Carter Lake is 78.6 degrees F as of 8/6.
******Note on the Wetsuit Rule:
According to the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules, Article IV, Rule 4.4, the wetsuit rule is stated as follows:
“Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wetsuit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit.”
Due to the nature of the Age Group National Championships, no athletes will be permitted to wear a wetsuit whatsoever if the water temperature exceeds 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Any idea when USAT will update the site? The fishing website link above shows it’s well below 78 and even if that’s wrong with the cooler nights it has to have lowered from their last update to being wetsuit legal.

Current temperature appears to be 69.

You think it has dropped that much that quickly?

I’m dubious, but it’s the only info I’ve been able to find.

Doesn’t really matter what USAT’s website says re. water temps. Clearly there is potential for the race to be wetsuit legal. So bring your wetsuit.

Looking at the cool weather over the next couple days, nothing USAT posts about current water temp will change the basic fact that the race might be wetsuit legal. So if the info doesn’t matter, we don’t need to know it.

I’m in Kansas City. The last 10 days have had unseasonably cool weather and we’ve had 2-3 different storms with 6-8" of rain each. I assume Omaha is seeing similar weather patterns. Normally, I’d say a temp drop like that is impossible, but this has been some crazy weather.

Looking more and more like it could be a wetsuit legal race with cool nights and 80 degree days.

Glad I shipped my wetsuit with my bike!

i just got back from a brief swim (only swimming “beach”: hard to find) here……directly across from the race site. i had my swimskin on. i thought it was fine. not overly warm, but thought it’d be fine for me for the race.
peggy

You should be dubious as the site you referenced uses an algorithm to determine the mean daily water temperature. Pretty sure USAT has a different method.
