Just saw the lake is measuring 86 degrees. That’s really warm.
Weather looks cooler for the new two weeks but any chance they would cancel the swim because the water is too hot?
Would that even be an option?

Wow… I forget what the upper limit is, but that has to be getting close.
I would be more concerned about the water quality. We have one lake I race in that has been closed now for a month because the hot temps
have caused the water quality to get unhealthy

I did a USAT sanctioned race a couple of weeks ago where the announced water temp was 89. The same race last year had the water temp announced as 91.7 degrees.
USAT has no upper limit.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and a cold front will come though and drop an inch+ of rain as it did last year. That dropped the water temp by several degrees. We can only hope.
the temp last year was 86. i left to visit family out east and am doing this race on my way home and did not even pack my wetsuit. i was worried about it being too hot before the race last year, but it was fine.
on the other hand, the heart during the run was brutal combined with the fact that i was one of the last age group waves and they ran out of everything but water at the aid stations and one aid station only had ice left. they have promised to correct this for this year, but im not optimistic.
Just did the NJ State Tri and the water was 88.7 on Saturday for the Sprint race, and 87.6 for the Oly on Sunday.
It was toasty in the water.
“….it was toasty…”
this was my reaction upon reading the (second) post on water temperature in omaha: ok, it’s going be toasty, so probably a slowish swim. i’m thinking my warm-up will be brief and/or pretty much taken care of.
peggy
My bet is that the race will be wetsuit legal. The weather forecast for the next week (today is Sunday) is for lows in the high 50s and highs in the high 70s. The forecast calls for rain and overcast skies. The lake is only 7 feet deep (supposedly). Here is a link to Water temperature reporting site for Carter Lake that says the current water temperature is 71°. I don’t know how current the reading is, but it appears to be current.

Good thought.
In other news, most of the race is actually in Iowa, not Nebraska? I went looking for confirmation re. your temp info and every reference I could find was of some Carter Lake in Iowa, not NE. Not until I hit Google Maps did I realize, dang, we’re racing (mostly?) in IA, lol. If I’d have been any more lost, I’d be flying in to the wrong town and, from my hotel room, wondered where everyone was.

It is all a matter of perspective. Ironman Louisville has been that hot. I would have guess that Cozumel 70.3 was that hot last year although I never heard a temp. And you are talking about 1 weeks here to go still. Also taking a surface water temp at 3pm in the afternoon is a huge difference between 7am.
Good thought.

The bike and run is entirely in Nebraska. The outbound leg of the swim skirts the Iowa border. Looking a Google Maps, it’s interesting that the state border runs through the middle of the Missouri River until it hits the Carter Lake area. Then it skoots inland to pick up the land on the “other” side of the lake before continuing down the river. I’m doing an AirBnB that is on the south shore and it is in IA. Strange.
USAT just posted on the event’s Facebook page that the water temp is 78.6 degrees.

Well damn that’s a big drop from the 86 degrees stated in the email on Monday that they sent out. So if it stays cool this week it could be wetsuit legal (78 for USAT). I better throw in the sleeveless just in case.
Wow, ok IF it happens, full or long John?
I have both full and sleeveless and wear the sleeveless above 72 as the full just gets too hot. At 78 degrees there’s no way I could swim in a full without cooking.
Competitive Rules Section 4.4
Wet suits. Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The wetsuit policy for elite athletes shall be determined by the USAT Athletes Advisory Council.
Thanks for posting that - any discussion I was referring to wearing a wetsuit was if it is legal for awards. I am guessing there will still be some that go with wetsuit above 78 but being the AG Nats it would be a small group.

The last few e-mails have stated that due to the nature of the event if the temperature is above 78 wetsuits aren’t allowed at all (ie. there’s no ‘no awards’ group)
True (and good point of clarification) Since it’s a National Age Group Championship, there would be no option for any non-AG division. Therefore, the prohibition.
