I’ve been - one a day, 7-11, Big Gulp, regular, Coca-Cola free for 33 days - now what?
After a good ride/work out/race/etc., etc. a nice refreshing something is mighty good.
Coke is additive, full of sugar, rots my teeth, and is no good.
Diet Coke isn’t much better, tastes terrible, and the chemical sweeteners can’t be very good for a person.
Tea - green, black, plain, boiled, even sugar free, has bad things in it and is certanilly habit forming for many people.
Beer - good once in awhile, but after every bike ride/workout? I wont be getting anything done for the rest of the day (except maybe sleeping).
So many “fruit” juice drinks aren’t that refreshing, are full of sugars, and have little real fruit juice.
Seriously, besides, ice cold water, has anyone found a really - good for you - refreshing, after workout drink?
Nothing tasted finer than that ice cold Coke that I had after a hot, hard and hilly 135k ride on the weekend. In the final 30 minutes of 4 1/2 hrs in the saddle, I was starting to fantasize about it!
While sugar is normally bad, during and immediately after a workout it has benefits such as restoring your glycogen stores. Ideally you want something with a 4:1 carb to protien ratio. Chocolate milk works well, Coke/Pepsi isn’t bad if you supplement some protien.
I’ll usually freeze some chocolate milk on a hot day so when I get home I have something very cold, refreshing and tasty
x2. You used to drink Big Gulps of coke and are worried about the “bad things” in tea? Ummm. OK.
That being said, a tea doesn’t hit the spot after a long, hot workout. I usually go for a couple tablespoons of Ovaltine in a glass of cold 1% milk.
It’s got some vitamins and it’s full of chocolaty goodness.
bad (according to some research ) - some caffeine and similar things. good (according to some research) - some benefical things (wine has some benefical things also). Bottom line – is tea really that good for a person - just because more people drink it than anything else?
Coconut Water, (some brands are better than others) that stuff is incredible after a workout, has to be ice-cold though.
X2 big time on the Coconut Milk after a long workout. Sweet, but not too sweet, a little hefty on the fat, but you actually need some of that after a hard workout. Loads of potassium. I usually take mine with a scoop of whey power or Endurox in it to supplement the protein. Plus, it is mildly basic and has some fiber in it, so it’ll help clear your guts out later in the evening.

I’m totally with you on that. It has to be Coke, and only Coke. I generally refrain from drinking it otherwise, but after a hard ride or race there is nothing like it. My little cooler that I bring to races ALWAYS has one in it.
I saw them handing coke cola to the “slave” rider at the TDF yesterday on TV. He took 2 cokes and about 6 water bottles from the team car to the rest of the team in the race. SSSSSOOOOOO…I can drink it too then, since the pros do it , too!! : )
