So I’m in the market for a new lid. Was all set on getting the Vanquish as its only 60ish seconds slower than the Aerohead over a full IM that seems a much better buy for a helmet that I can use daily AND for races.
Seems a no brainer but others seem to think the Vanquish is slower (much?) than 60 seconds. Even if it’s 2-3 minutes it still seems like a better buy for me, especially for hot conditions. But if we are talking 5mins for example then you start to think.
I did read this argument in the other thread as well. I can see why the Aerohead would be faster, it is a TT helmet. The Vanquish is a road helmet, and for a road helmet it performs remarkably well.
I own the Vanquish, and I think it’s a great helmet and quite fast as a road helmet. I would never use an Aerohead on a road bike obviously.
As for times, I couldn’t tell ya, but I would think that the Aerohead would be a good bit faster than the vanquish in the TT position over a long period of time
I have both helmets. I train with the Vanquish on my TT but race with the Aerohead, I do quite a few training session that are an 8 mile rectangle. Sometimes I wear the Vanquish and sometimes I will bring the Vanquish if I am trying for Strava KOM.
I was really surprised how slow I am with the Vanquish. I did an all time highest average wattage and was stil 15 seconds slower than my best run with the Aerohead, which was done the week before on 20 fewer watts. Air density was similar and everything else was the same for equipment. Last year a was doing the same route and the results were about the same. Your results may be different, but the Vanquish is just really slow on me.
Based on Mike’s data, his n=1 is 3-1/2min. for a IM.
Speculating here, but Giro’s claim of a 60sec. difference may be testing both helmets riding in a road bike (ex. hoods) position.
The Vanquish was most likely optimized for this position (I know the AA was), whereas the AH was optomized for a position with the tail blending with the rider’s back. Using the Vanquish in the TT position is probably why the gap to the AH is 3-1/2min, not 60sec.
I’d say, it depends very much on your position and ability to hold it. If you have a tendency to look Down (tail up), you’re better off with the vanquish.
Wether the savings are worth it is up to you

The tail up is a myth that needs to die and die right now.
Sure if you’ve got the tail straight up in the air it’s probably slower, probably. Who rides like that?
I can’t tell you the # of times I’ve tested and tails 3-5in off the back have tested out fastest, including holding your head with the tail flat.

me too.
be aware that the vanquish lenses seem to be susceptible to cracking pretty easily. plenty of reviews online, and the first one i received brand new out of the box was cracked.
outside that, for training, i do like it. plenty of ventilation and it feels like the vanquish on my head, so racing with the vanquish isnt a totally alien feeling.
