I will be traveling to an event or two where I intend to race draft legal and non-draft events. To minimize hassle, I will likely only take a road bike and throw on aerobars for the non draft events. I currently have a Felt FR with an Enve aero drop bar and I know Even sells a specific aero bar to attach to it. I’d like to get a new aero road bike but I am unsure if there is anything out there that will fit the new bars- Looking specifically at the Cervelo S5. Are there aero bar attachments for the new bikes?
My back up solution will be grabbing an aero frame and using the Enve drop bar and purchasing their aerobar kit.
For bikes that good ‘built in’ options you have the S5 and Venge
If you look at the top of the S5 handlebar you’ll notice two bolt covers. This kit will allow you to have put aerobars on it
The other bike that has kind of a nice solution is for the Venge. You would have to find a used Venge though. think the Tarmac SL7 has the same stem so maybe it is compatible with that bike.
If you are wanting to keep your Enve bars you would (as I am sure you know) just need to find a bike that does not have a proprietary stem or stem/bar system as that may affect cable routing and the ability to swap from what they come with to your Enve bars. Off the top of my head the Giant Propel and Cervelo Soloist are options. The Soloist is apparently 11 watts slower (at 45 km/hr) than the S5. However it comes with a just slightly aero-shaped aluminum bar. Put your Enve bar on there and you might be able to gain a few of those watts back.
The SL7 has a different stem but the same system works. Fairly certain the SL7 bars clip to the stem as well, so you could keep using the enve bars, although personally I’d just go with the rapide ones that come with it.
If you have the Enve SES aero road bar, they do make specific clip ons that go over the aero top part of the bar. I’ve used this set up for a hilly time trial (up and down), but would never use them again and would look at a different set up.
The Enve cups/pads are very big, not particularly comfortable (I ended up using different cups) and you can’t get the Enve extensions/pads that close to the stem, as they have to stay on the aero part of the bars. So your position is a fairly wide arm spread, with the stock parts.
If you ride with your extensions fairly wide and don’t use your bar top much for your hands (the pads block half of the bar top), you might like this set up. Lastly, they made some marks on the road bars, even when just tightened to proper torque spec, which is disappointing.
The specialized bars pictured, I also have experience and am not a fan of their heavy weight and how they integrate with the stem and road bars. I’m not surprised you rarely see either of these set ups being utilized. The integrated S5 setup looks more interesting.
If I was going your route, I would swap out the Enve aero road bars for regular Enve round road bars and install a clip on of choice, right near the stem. Now if you have the Enve ses road bars that are round, you’ve got lots of good clip on options.
