Aero profile road bars that fit clip ons

Cliffs: update thread, I found a 2014 topic on this, but a lot of the product page links were broken or not available any longer. Outside of the Giant clip-on setup for their aero road bars, is there anything (Chinabay included) that is an aero road bar that is known to work with clip ons?

Longer version:
I’m at a place I’d like to change out the road bars for various reasons. One mainly that if I’m broken out or part of a break it freaking KILLS my forearms on the factory round bars to TT on them in my turns out front.

The flatter top aero road bars are awesome for this.

But, I use this bike to do TT’s for the foreseeable future.

To avoid having to swap bars out to TT or do a relay part of an IM, I’m looking for options.

I thought about buying a Chinese TT cockpit and swapping the STI’s to the ends of the base bars for TT’s. That’s been done with some success, but it is a kludge. A kludge probably not UCI allowable either.

Most aero road bars are compatible with clip-ons.

Could you explain?

I get that some true base bars aren’t round and accept clip ons. However, that’s probably sold by the same company.

Giant’s SLR road bars have matching clip on clamps. Is there an FSA, Easton, or Chinese road bar that does the same?

Most good aero road bars don’t have enough round space on the sides of the stem to fit a round set of clip ons.

I’m talking about something like this:

3T has 2 bars available. One with short/shallow bends and the other with traditional drop. There is enough round space by the stem clamp for clip ons.

Thanks.

Looking at the spec sheet, man it would be close though.

$150 for the alloy version ain’t bad given I could keep my clip ons that I have.

I run the 3T Aeronova in carbon on my S1. I bought them because they will accept clip on bars for doing TT.

It works well for that with one small exception. The clamping area on either side of the stem is not wide enough for use with a ton of clip on bars. I have an older set of Zipp Vukaclip bars that I wanted to use and they would not fit. I ended up using a set of Profile J4 brackets that worked.

I appreciate the help, the search terms I was using were not good enough to return good results. Seeing the 3T stuff, it has helped!

The bars are everywhere used, so price there will be good on the 3T’s.

I found their clip on’s for sale used. I’d just have to ditch my current set of clipons.

The stack on those 3T clips looks pretty tall to me for some reason.

I was doing this same search as the semi aero road bars that came on my R5 don’t even have enough clamping area next to the stem for a out front computer mount. I do like the flat section mainly for my hands to rest for a climbing position…and the aero benefits don’t hurt either.

3t would likely work with most standard clip on aero bars. Bontrager also makes some aero road bars that seem to have a much wider round clamp area before it tapers, but it will depend on how wide your stem is and how wide the clamps on the aero bars are. I think they mention in their Q&A that there is 45 mm of space from the center to where it starts to taper. So 90 mm of total clamp space.

Other bars I looked at like Easton claimed only 50 mm of total clamp space, so similar the bar I have now.

I just went with a stem bolt mounted computer/gopro mount for the time being, but like you I do want the option in the future to put clip on shortys as I don’t use my TT bike anymore and there are a couple of TTs where there isn’t a merckx division that I do. It’s just not a priority for me now.

Would you happen to know the width of the stem you were using?

Not off the top of my head but I’ll check it and post it tomorrow.

It’s an older Zipp SL Speed stem if that helps.

With the aero bars uninstalled:

BIL has a mill machine. I could always make a bracket that is narrower for $5 in materials if necessary.

I think I’ll try a 3T aeronova. I will wait to see if he measures the stem width thing.

I had the 3T Aeronova Stealth (= Carbon) on my Road/Tri Hybrid and loved it! You can use 3T Clip-Ons or PD Undermount to get you lower. For the PD undermount you need to rise the upper clamp a bit to get it over the area where the bar flattens. With the 3T you might need a bridge if you prefer your pads wider apart. Both parts are sold seperately… either way - it works!

As for the bar: clamping area is approx 8cm so the extensions are somewhat 9cm apart. The bar has 6° of sweep, so the drops are like 2cm further apart than the hoods. Flat section is comfy, the carbon bar has very well designed internal routing and killer looks

Planet X also has an offbrand set that looks promising:

Can’t seem to find the matching stem and extensions, but I’m certain I’ve seen them in the past.

Is it a legitimate concern in a design of the round clip ons that I don’t like the idea that they can “twist”? Whereas some of the other clamp styles it isn’t possible to twist once installed.

For some reason, with my current basic Profile ones for my round stock Giant bars, they seem to twist sometimes.

Coming from the other direction, are there any clip-on mounts that will fit fully integrated aero drop bars like the Canyon ergo cockpit?

I am looking for similar set up and likely landing on Profile Design Canta Ergo based on the reach coordinates I need and the fact that it allows for internal cabling.

How did you do that under mount? What brackets? Any other detailed pics?

My only complaint with my current setup is the stack. My whole goal was to be as lazy and simple as I can so I didn’t want to be changing out stems to get more drop. That would work perfect.
