Aero Legs

So I decided since my tri is on Saturday that I would go ahead and shave my legs today and then just maintain the hairlessness till that time. Well after 6 disposable razors, 30 minutes in the shower, and a few cuts, I decided to saw screw shaving. At this point I had half of one leg done. I went and bought a wax kit and thought it would go by faster. Well after wax got everywhere and my legs were burnt I said screw waxing. I made another trip to the store and bought Nair thinking this was the solution, and I would be set. Well my legs caught on fire. Most of the hair is gone, but now I have emotional scars.

This will make me more aero on the bike and run right? I’m hoping for 3 seconds shaved (waxed and Naired) off my time.

Just use a body groomer first to remove the majority (if not most) of the hair and then use a feminine razor (i.e. one with a generous moisturizing strip) to finish it off. My personal favorite is the Venus Embrace. And yes, I am still fully a man after having used this product

I’m a fan of those super cheap Gillette 2-blade disposable razors. They take off far less skin than razors with more blades, so you don’t feel so bad after your shave. But yes, body groomer to get off the bulk before the shave is a must.

Leg shaving tips:

  1. Use a set of clippers to get down to stubble length before shaving.

  2. Use those cheap Bic single blade razors. Multiple blades clog, and leg skin is a lot tougher than your face.

  3. You will get some nicks around your knees. Be gentle around your Achilles and that big vein on the outside of your ankle.

  4. A light splash with isopropol alcohol after will sting, but will help prevent razor bumps.

  5. Your pants and sheets will feel strange for a few nights (normal).

…but once you get used to it…you’ll want it 24/7!

I once naired my legs on the recco of the girls swim team, and left it on for an hour and got mild chemical burns, plus had blood oozing out my pores. Good god the water at the district meet two days later burned. Nair, never again!

I haven’t had hair on my legs for 25 years, but if I had it and were going to shave…I’d take the bulk of it off first with electric hair clippers of some sort (down to ~1/8 inch). After that, shaving will be easy, though you’ll probably knick the crap out of yourself for a while until you learn how to shave those parts. Just go lightly…bony knees are tough to smooth a razor over.

I use the Slowman-approved “mowing” method. Basically skip steps 2-4 above. Perpetual stubble rocks!

I learned a great piece of leg shaving advice from a roadie. After the first time you shave, just think of your legs as 4 quadrants (knee to foot on one leg is one quadrant, knee to hip another…etc). After the first shave, you just shave 1 quadrant per day (alternating each for obvious reasons). It helps to minimize the shaving time.

Oh yeah…and follow the advice of the other guys regarding clipping the hair short before using the razor. I’ve taken to using an electric razor for my legs. The body groomer works pretty well…might just use my braun since it has a cleaner that I put it in after every use.

I used my beard trimmer to buzz my arms and legs, and then I use a straight razor to get them completely smooth.

Nair works great. Put it on for 6 - 8 mins. Wipe off. Shower. Then use a razor for all the spots you missed.

Nair doesn’t feel so great. Thanks for all the shaving advice. Even when I was on swim team I never had to shave.
