Aero helmets for large noggins?

Any other incredibly ‘smart’ people have success with fitting an aero helmet over their large melon? I usually use regular vented helmet but will be doing IMAZ (first Iron distance event for me) and thought I might try aero helmet…if I can find one that fits. I have tried Specialized and Giro both in Large and they were too small. =/

I will save some of you the trouble. No, this is not me…but close!

LG Rocket …size L.

Thanks! I will give it a try.

Any idea of the hat size involved here? Just take a tape measure and wrap it around the biggest part of your head.

I have the Spiuk Kronos but it barely, fits over my big fat head. In fact, I have to put the helmet on first and then my sunglasses or I can’t get it on.

Its 24" around. The Specialized claims that it fits up to 24" but theres no way I could’ve squeezed it on. I laugh when I see a hat that says “one size fits all”

I have a large-ish head, but not mutant large (unless you ask my mum about giving birth to me! LOL) my head is 60cm around as most manufacturers say to measure.

I ride a Bell Meteor II. I could sort squeeze into it with the semi-rigid pads in it. It took ages to get into and out of and fit terribly. Now I have ripped out (carefully) semi-rigid rubber liners and it fits waaaaaay better. I’ve added a couple of areas of self adhesive foam tape to get it to sit properly however. I believe this still allows it to meet the ANSI and similar regs, as it’s the styrofoam that meets the crash criteria, not the foam padding.

It’s still snug to get on, but the ear flaps are quite flexible so I just stretch them out, slide it on, tuck my ears in with my thumbs (practice does make this faster) and jamb on my sunglasses (M-Frames which blend in with the helmet shape beautifully ) and I’m good to go.

I like the Bell as it is a very small helmet externally (reduced frontal area) compared with the bubblehead Giro helmet and others so I feel wicked fast, even as I ride along at 30kph! hehehe I find the wind noise to be mind numbing. I’m experimenting with areas of light self adhesive foam areas (door weatherstripping actually), inside the ear flaps, to modify the noise while riding. Soon I hope to have it perfect., so all I can hear is my heart beat thumping in my ears!

Oddly my head isn’t all that big…just a regular 7 1/4" cap size. It’s wide though (remember it’s the girth that counts ;), which is an issue with just about every aero helmet model. I took a gamble on a Specialized TT2 on close-out and whadda you know, size M/L fits. You’ll be fine in the LG Rocket…I couldn’t squeeze into a M but my head was swimming in the L.

60cm? Mine is bigger so maybe I am ‘mutant large’ (geez…opened myself up for some jokes there). If you had to do that much work to get into it I may not be so lucky with those few extra cm.

I just looked at the Spiuk size chart. It says their Large goes up to 24.02" or 61cm. That might work but certainly no room to roam.

I need to get home and check what my hat size is. I can’t remember off hand. But I was considering the specialized as a replacement for my Spiuk so if it’s even tighter (or even listed as the same), I’ll really need to try one on first before buying.

I don’t think the Kronos will be big enough. For my melon a large Giro and Kronos are both very tight. If you can’t fit a large Giro the Kronos will not fit either. The only aero helmet that fit comfortably that I have tried is a large LG rocket.

I have the same problem. The only helmets that fit me are the Bells… and not all of them. I don’t bother with an aero helmet because none that I’ve ever tried on have fit me. My LBS only have Giros and some other brand I can’t think of right now. I plan on visiting one that is kind of far away from where I live next week. If I find anything that fits I’ll let you know.

My head circumference is 24 1/8" btw.

Lazer Tardiz is massive.

I don’t know anybody with a head larger than mine, and this helmet fits me with lots of room to spare. Seriously, this thing could make a watermelon aero.

Thanks! See the post below yours as well. He recommends the Lazer Tardiz.

Very good to know! I will try some on this week. I will include the Lazer as you sound confident that it’ll fit! What are your thoughts on it otherwise?

WOW, those things go up to 64cm which is like 25.2 inches. If one of those doesn’t fit I don’t know what would.

We could always go with the Darth Vader helmet. It has some aero qualities!

And built in respiration with the chest module!

Ooooh. Talking aero and Star Wars in same thread. My inner geek is jumping for joy!

Things I like:
I love the retention system on it, so much that I am trying to justify buying one of their road helmets. The band around your head is flexible, so I would imagine it fits lots of head shapes well. I don’t take heat very well and I have never felt like the helmet was baking my brain. There is also a water spout on top to pour water onto your head, but I haven’t used it successfully (kind of a gimmick). The helmet feels a bit more solid and high quality than other aero helmets (the aero shape in back feels structural instead of a piece of flexible plastic).

Things I don’t like:
The helmet is so large that it looks kind of rediculous. In certain conditions (descending very fast with wind gusts) I have felt like it was scooping air somehow (felt like it was going to pick me up or rip my head off). Not a huge deal, but to make the shape fit my position, I have to make an effort to wear it a bit farther back on my head than I would otherwise. The tail isn’t very long and a longer tail might suit my position a little better. The dimples on the tail are gimmicky.

They are coming out with a visor/shield thing this year, that would probably solve the scooping problem that I mentioned before, but may also restrict ventilation slightly.
