how much would a an aero helmet ( with less ventilation) compare to well ventilated regular bike helmet( atmos, bolt,…etc) affect the performance of an athlete? Taken into consideration some of the parameters that might cause significant concerns during a half or a full ironman event like head temperature regulation in the entire event. Head temperature/ventilation is infact very noticeable to us triathletes when doing training rides or even races wearing a regular or an aero helmet. So which is probably more beneficial to use?
Aero is going to be better if you can take the heat. I think you would be fine throwing a little water on your face. Do you have any vents on your aero helmet?
Just like every piece of gear in triathlon…it all depends on the individual. Well worth it to ride with an aero helmet if you’re in the aero position for the majority of the ride. (The whole purpose of the aero helmet is to be aero and not necessarily to keep you cool.) Another thing to keep in mind is your hydration needs for longer races since the aero helmet is hotter. If you have this dialed in pretty well, that’s another plus for throwing on the aero helmet.
Helmets like the Wingspan are quite aero, but have lots of vents to both allow some airflow and dump in water.
In fact it is not for me, here in austin, where it is 105 all the time, and I do TTs at 5pm in the peak of that heat, with an aero helmet, every time.
it sucks when you STOP for sure. don’t stop!
but really I’m not aware that anyone has shown whether an aero helmet on a hot day would affect your run or slow you down on the bike. some assume it does though.

When is REALLY hot I always choose ventilation over aero because the performance enhancement I get from the aero helmet is far outweighed by the extra heat - which drags my performance down much more than the aero helps it. That just my personal preference, though.
I have the LG aero helmet with several vents, but have taped the vents over. I can’t tell the difference in heat between that and a standard helmet.

how did you measure this?
at what distances do ya notice it?
what about aero helmets that have vents?
