There are multiple threads about this. I’m sure you’ll find a lot of info if you search the forums.
I purchased a couple of months ago. I went with the Louis Garneau Rocket, instead of the cheaper Prologue. The Rocket is supposed to give more of an aerodynamic benefit. There are several others out there that are pretty good, too (upcoming Giro advantage, Limar Chrono, etc.). I think the Giro looks pretty cool, but I didn’t want to wait for it.
Edit: In response to your last post, I believe the Advantage will be right around the same price as the LG Rocket, somewhere between $150 and $190US.
i did search them…came up with a bunch of threads with no real consensus…the John Cobb thread didn’t touch on the old garneau helmet either.
anyone seen a MSRP on the new giro helmet yet? tri mag had it at TBA when I saw it…
No consensus on ST??? That is a first.
IMO, all the helmets are going to be comparable. Try a few on, see which one fits best and makes you look most like an alien. Then write your name and phone number on the inside so it can be returned to you in case you accidently leave it in the schoolyard.
MSRP on the Giro is $150, and it’s available (as a pre-order, I think) through several online retailers.
As for the “here we go again” comment, it’s two-fold:
The many treatments of the discussion of aero helmets already on the forum – the fact that there’s no consensus should just confirm the assertion that Gary Tingley put out there that it depends on the person what helmet is best.
-and-
The continuation of the Bicycling misquote of the MIT stuff that said that an aero helmet is better than aero wheels for drag (in the real world, this is not true, since you don’t always have a straight-on wind and you don’t hold your head perfectly still).
How do you think that helmet stacks up against some of the newer entries into the aero helmet market? My friend has one from his days as mechanic for the olympic team (Stephen Kent) and I can borrow it for races.
i’m looking at a prologue for $80 cdn, or a rocket for $160cdn… i’m not sure i can justify it for double the price…esp. since i don’t TT that much, and i’d still race tri’s with a regular helmet (i sweat like a mofo)…
yes, but sweating for an hour is fine. I can rehydrate appropriately.
Sweating during an Ironman in 35C weather is a different story. At IMC, the first focus is on proper nutrition and hydration, that has cost me a LOT more time in previous years than aerodynamics has…
If you want a good helmet for an IM, get the RP Syton. Better than a standard helmet for aero performance but not as hot as a full aero hemet like the rocket, advantage or meteor.
