Aero helmet on training rides

do you wear your aero helmet on your tri bike out training? or just your road helmet?

Neither.

Once when I got it to make sure it fit. Otherwise, no.

Normally a road helmet…Bell Sweep

Wear it just enough to make sure you’ve got any issues with appropriate sunglasses, venting and fit worked out before a big race or hotter than usual race but otherwise no, train with a road helmet.

I almost exclusively wear my road helmet when training.

The only time I’ve worn my pointy hat on a training ride, is when I’m checking to make sure my latest race setup actually works (ie, sunnies fit with the helmet, the straps are the right length, and so on) That is usually only for a 20km shakedown ride during my taper. the ear flaps on my pointy had make it much harder to hear traffic, so I don’t think it’s as safe on roads with cars

It’s also the only time I use my race wheels outside of race day.

aero helmet on training ride = Fred

Only time it is allowed is when your doing your final ride into bike and gear check in.

If I’m doing a lot of transition practice, then yes. Otherwise my Catlike Whisper Plus is far cooler and more comfortable for training.

Absolutly… i am a moron :0) kidding… Okay couple times before races just to get neck muscles used to being in it. Also when i cant find my other two road helmets because i misplaed them and i am blaming the rest of my family for making me late and making me look like a goof ball. Which i actually do not need their help doing :0)

Just for fun, I like to wear mine on my indoors training rides. It makes the experience feel more ‘real’.

Wearing an aero helmet during a training ride is likely to get you ridicule from any roadie. Only wear it in the ride or two before a key race to make sure things are fine. Otherwise I don’t. It looks stupid.

I wear mine for a few final long rides before an Ironman, just so that I am used to the lack of airflow on hot days and the slightly higher weight as well pressure around the ears (Giro Advantage). Other than that, road helmet.

The day before a race, yes. I like to make sure everything is 100% dialed in during my pre-race brick.

I have an older LG Chrono helmet that I’ll sometimes wear on rainy or chilly days, as it’s actually much more comfortable than a regular road helmet in those conditions.

Yes, this makes me a total Fred - but when the weather’s crappy like that, there’s nobody around to mock me for it.

I see a few riders wearing their aero helmets these days on the IMC bike course. With the weather conditions usually in the 30’s (C) on race day, I’d say its a smart thing to do. I personally don’t have an aero helmet for IMC and I am not sure I want one for that reason. But seriously, how much hotter are they to wear? I’d hate to be that uncomfortable for 5-6 hours. Bike times really haven’t improved that much since these helmets came out have they?

do you wear your aero helmet on your tri bike out training? or just your road helmet?

No, Lazer Genesis for training and Aero for TT’s and Tri’s ONLY

Every once in a while on long weekend rides to make sure it fits. ‘Train like you race, race like you train’ and all that. 90% of time I train with a road helmet. Some cheap Bell helmet I’ve had for about 5 years.

Are we all forgetting Strava? It’s OK if we’re out Strava hunting, isn’t it?

I see in Central Park every Thursday evening this training group decked out in full TT garb…TT bikes, lycra, aero helmets and they do a paceline in the TT position. Looks effing stupid. I could understand if it is one off or every now and then, but we are talking every week (and they may do it more often but I am just not around to witness it). Plus, why are they riding in a paceline…training to draft/cheat? Anyway, it is always my mission to stay with them and try to beat/stay with them whilst purposefully riding next to the train sitting up (they are pretty fast (~15’/loop (6.1 miles)) but they only do a few laps before having a break at Engineers’ Gate). Sometimes I can hang (generally beat them on the hills but they are faster on the flats) other times I can’t…either way it is good training for me since I train alone and look for people to push me. If you wear your TT get up training on popular cycle routes, probably expect others to act similarly as above…last Thursday they came by and a huge random group was latched on…funny but dangerous as they were riding through groups of runners (who should have been in the running lanes but weren’t) at 25+ mph with lead rider whistling as a warning (that would piss me off if I was a runner, skater, etc).

Don’t see why you need to wear your TT helmet unless you have just brought it and want to dial in fit and any temperature issues. I would definitely rather be wearing a road helmet in any crash as well.

Only to every roadie specific group ride I attend.

Kidding. I don’t own one. I think they look incredibly stupid, and I would probably need to train way harder before I felt like my helmet was holding me back in the standings.

Yep.
About 70% of the time.
Had a neck injury and suffer on long rides in the aero position (IM), the helmet aggravates it, so I train as I race, to limit the distraction.
I don’t care what anybody thinks about how I look.
