Aero helmet for winter cycling?

Does anybody have any experience with an aero helmet in the winter?
I’ve been considering getting a ski helmet for winter cycling to stop my forehead from freezing, but an aero helmet might provide all the same benefits. (and is useful during the summer)

The main problem I have is as my head sweats, my forehead below my headband gets wet causing my brow to get really cold.
(I know it’s a bit early but the temperature just dropped 10 degrees here and it got me thinking about winter)

If you get one with a visor that should help keep your sweat from freezing. Plus it will help keep your face warm.

I would get the Giro Air Attack and tape up the vents. That way you don’t look like a dork training in an aero helmet.

An idea…I made a winter riding helmet a few years back that I still use…started with a road helmet from Target or Walmart that covered more forehead than is covered by the more expensive brands. Added a few blocks of “fitting foam” leftover from some other helmet to the forehead area…lastly, I taped over the vents…It’s very warm. David K

ok. I guess you would look a little less dorky. It’s still better than an aero helmet.

What are you wearing under your helmet? Can’t you just pull your beanie or whatever down lower so there is no gap between it and you glasses?

I wear a thin poly headband under my helmet. Like this:

It keeps my ears warm, which is usually the only thing that bothers me.

Specialized makes a nice winter beanie made to wear under a helmet. I can ride into the teens F. Comfortably.

I usually don’t wear anything under my helmet, just a headband over my forehead and ears. I think part of the problem is that I sweat a lot, even in the winter. My forehead is usually fine until my headband gets completely soaked. Different glasses or ski goggles might fix that though, I hadn’t really thought of that.

I don’t have a problem with looking like a dork. I go through my whole life looking like a dork.

The air attack does look interesting, but the second benefit an aero helmet might have is covering the ears, so I wouldn’t need a headband anymore.

ski goggles aren’t going to work if you sweat that much, they will fog up.

A thinner headband or get a couple and switch out when the first one gets soaked.

Rudy Wingspan TT ships with vent covers you can pop in to close up the vents. That and a helmet beanie should work.

keep your road helmet and spend $20 or less on a nice balaclava from turtlefur. plenty of forehead coverage.

A swim cap or packing tape to cover the vents in your regualr helmet.

What brand is you helmet? If you have a Lazer chances are they have a rain cover / aero shell for it. It is a cover that snap on to the helmet. I have one for my Lazer O2 helmet.

after reading these comments… what about ski goggles? those will cover most of the forehead… and they are generally really warm

I wear mine when its cold! It’s a lot better than my regular helmet. I have the LG Vorritce

x2, I have the clear shell for my lazer as well and really like it.

Its not necessarily an aero helmet but nonetheless its what I use up here in Alaska Snow biking. Its the Giro Seam and it has served me well in 20 below. It is nice because it has an adjustable vent system that you can open or close to help regulate your temperature along with removable ear pads (muffs). Add a pair of goggles and balaclava and your all set. http://www.giro.com/us_en/seam.html?gclid=CIm2w5ntzrICFWHZQgod7AcAmQ

Rapha winter hat is my fave, or try multiple cycling caps.

The giro helmet winter mesh + earmuffs works very well.

Castelli has great winter options, including numerous headwear options that address all your problems.

You can try using multiple head scarves, storing the extras in your jersey pockts.

Id suggest grabbing two rapha winter hats and using them successively for long winter rides.
