Aero Disc Wheel Covers... worth it?

So still just getting into tri’s and on a limited budget, so I got my QR and was looking at some new wheel sets and came across Disc wheel covers… is there anyone out there that has them? I have found some good things and bad things about them but looking for some more feedback… anyone out there try them?

Yes, a disc cover is bang for the buck fast tasty goodness.

Use the search function here on Slowtwitch and you will find tons of info on them. To answer your question- YES. Get them from Wheelbuilder.com.

Thanks for the heads up. DEFINITELY a whole hell of a lot of talk out on the forum about this. Chalk it up to laziness on my part after searching around for other info.

Yes, well worth it since you get 2 wheels for 1. Wheelbuilder is the way to go. They promote the Zip 808 with a disc cover. The 808 is great because you can ride it on both road and tri bikes, then slap on a disc cover for TRI racing. Adding/Removing the cover is very simple - and if you ever have a question about how to do it - just youtube it!

Pardon my ignorance but this is a real question … are there wheels out there that only fit one and not the other ? I thought that those things were pretty much interchangeable (i.e., rear to rear, front to front).

disc cover has the same aerodynamics as a real disc.

issues with a disc cover include:

possible casset rubbing
incompatible with certain wheel sets
warpage
no “whup whup” sound

Yes, for the most part*, wheels, front and rear, can be used between road and tri bikes; however, riding a profile greater than 80 on the rear of a road bike is not very common. I’d never put my Zipp 1080 on my road bike.

*NOTE, Cervelo’s S3 (pre-2010) didn’t accommodate many rear wheel brands because the chain stays were too narrow.

If you are thinking about riding with a power meter, now is the time to decide if you are going to use a Power Tap. If so, then build that into a versatile wheel so that you can train and race with it. Train without the disc cover on and then slap it on for races where distances/conditions permit.

then slap it on for races where distances/conditions permit.

So, always?

Fabian says that the 808 is the new 404. Seriously, an 606 or 808 set is seriously versatile and can be raced pretty much anywhere.

The answer is…it depends!

If you are in the 35-39 age group, then no, they dont do a damn thing and arent worth the asking price

Jack! Jack! Wake up!

Quick, somebody go check his house and call the cops!

+1 on 808 with cover

disc is a disc. the wind isn’t gonna think differently

Oh I don’t know maybe… Of course one of our best bangs for your buck

fabian’s average yaw angle is a lot lower than everybody here except the pros =)

and a little lower than them!!

Yes - they were worth it for me. They made my bike look faster… and isn’t that what it’s all about?

Nice paint job, from what I can tell wheelbuilder doesn’t offer the hypnotic option, so nice work.

sweet looking cover. Got the same one hypnotized myself once looking at it and ran right into the back of someone

did you ever do the cover on the gigantex rim?

… I was part of the group buy and (assuming they arrive), was considering the cover for the rear …

nope
