Aero chain rings?

So, I’ve been looking for a a set of (aero) Q rings, and I’ve been offered a set of none aero q rings for a very reasonable price… Should i take them? Is there much difference? what are my savings if i get aero?

I think I can safely say, you won’t win if you get the non-aero ones.

This old aerodynamic study quotes a 6 seconds per 40k time savings for a certain aero crank set:

Unfortunately I can’t find anyone who has any idea what that particular crank set is like, or what they were comparing it too.

There is a little bit of aero savings to be had with an aero ring for sure though.

Hello josh_love and All,

You can put clear packing tape on the regular chainrings to keep them clean.

… Although the stiffer solid aero chainring might shift better but be a bit heavier.

Don’t forget resale value of the aero rings is slightly reduced as they don’t fit a bunch of cranks.

Just got a set of aero q rings and love them. Rings are very stiff and shift well (upgraded from a sram TT ring). Though I don’t have a personal experience, I have heard that the non aero q rings do not shift as well because they are not as stiff as the aero version. Maybe someone can chime in that has used both.

I have a set of aero Q-rings on my P5 currently. They’re a 52/36 with a 110 BCD. I’d be willing to sell them as I want to go back to the 50/34 (but I want to keep a q-ring). I just find that I’m more consistent with the compact set. I haven’t ordered my 50/34’s yet…but if you’re interested PM me and maybe we can work something out.
