Aegis Trident (1)

What does anyone think of this bike? A friend just bought a 2004 58cm frameset on eBay for $800, but thinks it may be too big for him. He says if it doesn’t fit, he’ll sell it to me for the same $800.

I’m 6’4" ~190 lbs, and this is the largest size they make. My friend tells me that his bicycle shop in St. Louis tells him it’s ideal for the taller rider. I haven’t seen the frame, so I don’t know what kind of shape it’s in, but I trust this guy… besides, I’d never buy it unless I could see the frame first and have it checked out by someone who knows what they’re doing…

But, I thought I’d ask. Do you consider $800 a good price for this frameset… assuming the frame is in good condition?

sounds like a pretty good deal to me although locally I’ve seen quite a few Tridents going for dirt cheap as used bikes recently…

I’ve got an '04 Trident that I bought from Bicycle Sports when it went out of business. It’s a 58 cm as well. When I got it built up, I really didn’t like it. So I tried to sell it on ebay (after several attempts in the classifieds section of this forum). On ebay, the highest bidder went up to about $750 for frame and fork. No way I was selling it for that. I contacted the high bidder off line and tried to make a deal with him for considerably less than what I paid for it (but more than $750), and he wouldn’t bite. These bikes have a reputation (or at least they used to) of being a bit of a boutique bike. They’re nice carbon frames, and I’m talking good made in the USA carbon here. But on the used market, for whatever reason, they just don’t bring a very good price. I think $800 is about par for the course for Tridents on ebay.

So in the end, I decided to keep mine, and now that I have a few hundred miles on it, I’m pretty happy with it. I’m 6’2" with a longish torso compared to my legs. I think I’ve achieved a good position on it, but it took some tinkering to get there. It’s a big frame – much bigger than a normal 58. It’s long in the top tube with a pretty good standover. If you’re 6’4", it should fit you well.

I think mine fits me in the top tube, but the standover is a little taller than I prefer. All in all, though, I like it. If you could pick it up for $800, you’d be getting a pretty good deal (assuming it’s in good shape).

I’ve been riding one since the summer of 2000 and would rate it favorably. I’m 5’11" 170 lbs and have a 56cm frame. The common complaints with the Aegis are that the top tube is too long and the head tube is too tall. I haven’t had a problem with the top tube (though I did chose a shorter stem for this year, a 100mm). The taller head tube means you can’t get a scary-aggressive drop from saddle to bars, but it should be fine for almost everyone. I’m running a 15+cm drop from saddle to aerobars without a problem. I did have to switch out from the syntace bars I was originally using to a lower-profile armrest- i.e. If you want to get low you need a aerobar that doesn’t have really high armrests. I think for most people having a higher head tube is actually a good thing, since you avoid having a stack of spacers and a positive rise stem on your bike.

It’s not the lightest frame in the world, but it has held up to my fairly aggressive riding very well- I have some history of breaking bicycle parts, and the frame is still solid underneath me. It handles ok for a tri bike and can be wicked fast on the flats when combined with a disc and decent aero position.

I think $800 is below the wholesale cost for the frame straight from Aegis. Hold out for $700 to teach your friend a lesson about buying things on Ebay.

It’s not the best bike out there anymore, but it’s a solid, comfortable (and fast) frame. The bike is far from the limiting factor in my race performance. Plus it’s nice having a bike that not everyone else is riding.

What color is it? And what fork comes with it?
Two very important criteria.

Color is black… fork is, I think, the standard fork from 2004… don’t know what that is.

This was my first real Tri bike. As I put in another post, I bought one from e-bay fully built with Dura Ace for $2,600. My insurance company gave me $5,200 for it when it got stolen. Bearing that in mind, I suppose I am sentimental about it but I really liked it. I am 6’1.5" 33" Inseam and had a 56 which fit fine although similar to the other poster, I was not positioned very agressively.

It rode smooth. I replaced it with a new P3 w DA10 which is of course great. But I miss the carbon mystique. Also most folks did not recognize the mark.

I really shopped hard at Nytro and rode both the P3 and the T2 from Aegis but ultimaltly got great bike and better components on the P3 plus I was able to afford a Hed Disc and Hed alps front wheel.
