ADVICE.. Working out after getting IRONMAN tattoo

Hey guys I recently got the Mdot tat on my calf after IMLOU. So I forgot to ask the tattoo guy if its ok to workout, I know I cant swim for a couple weeks but was wondering if its ok to still bike and run. I am indoors and use a fan so sweating isn’t a huge issue especially on my legs. Any info would be great!

Thanks!

No big deal to workout
.

Why workout? You got the trophy you wanted, what Is left to do in this sport?

To get faster! lol

I hope you’re being well compensated for the ad space.

Is working out after getting IRONMAN tattoo any different than working out after getting a regular tattoo?

Its my first tatto, so I have no idea. Really dont want to risk infection.

I’m getting a tattoo tomorrow to commemorate an ultra, and I was planning on asking, so I will let you know.

not a big deal.
just put on whatever lotion they recommend.
i had a nice sized piece on my ribs. ran that day-no big deal, ran the next couple days and it was super sore but no harm to the ink

I’m sure you’d love another condescending “why would you put a corporate logo on your body” post, but since I 1) have a mdot tattoo and 2) am not an asshole, I’ll say that biking and running should be fine…just make sure you don’t let it dry out (I used a light layer of Aquaphor ointment…it is super thick and seems to last a long time). Avoiding swimming as you mentioned is probably a good idea.

  2. is an opinion: you do triathlons and have a slowtwitch account so the odds are not in your favor on that one

Haha, excellent point. It’s all relative, I guess.

Has anyone ever suggested that if you have an M Dot Tat you should put your time below it? Just a suggestion. That way we can judge people on several levels.

Appreciate it, thank you

I busted out laughing at that one

Almost sprayed my chips on my desk.

  1. I have tons of tattoos. 2) I AM an asshole.

As others have stated. Running and riding is fine with new tattoos. NO pool for at least 2 weeks. Just keep it clean (as normal, one would hope) and keep aquaphore or whatever lotion you’re using on it. Just a thin layer.
Also, sun can leech ink. So, avoid massive amounts of sun for those 2 weeks.

Good luck, and congrats on your finish, and your tattoo!

You seem to know what you are talking about, so I have a question for you. Tomorrow morning I am getting a tattoo. I had planned on working outside in the afternoon. It is supposed to be sunny and 75. Do I just keep it covered so it is protected from dirt and sun? Any extra precautions?

Well, that’s a good question!
Long answer: the 1st 24-ish hours after getting the tattoo is more important than the following days. The first day, you have basically an open wound. (Feels like very light road rash.) During the 1st day, I might not jostle around or do any big workouts. It is possible to work that ink back out. I’ve seen splotchy tattoos because ink was worked back out that 1st day. (The bigger and more colorful the piece, the more this matters. A small single colored lettering wouldn’t be as impacted) Some ink will come out, that’s normal. But you want those thousands of tiny pin picks to close up and hold that ink in.
The artist will (should) put a light coating of vaseline over it, and cover it in shrinkwrap. This will help retain said ink until you shower that night/next morning. (Dont get me wrong, it’s NEVER coming out completely, and it’s not worth stressing about.) But the bigger the piece, the more I’d recommend a recovery day. Atleast that 1st day. Then, after that 1st day, you’re good to go.
Short answer, keep that plastic wrap on the rest of that day, and you’re fine. Thatll keep dust and particulate off/out.
-good luck!

Darn. I might have to spend the afternoon on the patio with a book and a drink, just to be safe. I selected the artist because I like her use of color and detail.
