Advantages of S bends?

I agree they look cool / Lance uses them / etc. but can someone tell me what the benefits of S Bends are? sorry if this is explained somewhere else but I couldn’t find it in the other S-bend threads.

thanks!

If I remember correctly, this was a huge debate that went on and on during tour time… 2003 or 2004

I think that it is all a matter of hand positioning, go with what is most comfortable and powerful, be it regular, s-bend, or straight:

.

I’ve got straight bends on my bike and I love them. The position feels more natural for me, but it may not for you. I like being able to push up on my aerobars, especially when I need to accelerate.

As Gary already stated…it all about hand position.

When I rode steeper, I pulled up quite a bit on the bars…and perferred straights. In a more slack position, I don’t pull up and prefer the pistol grip of the S.

It’s actually not new. Scott RCO bars from the early 90’s used them albeit a bit more extreme. Very little is new in the industry, just modifications of what has been used.

My new aerobar the Genesis will have both straight and “Pistol Grips.” It really comes down to fit and comfort. Neither is better. A comfortable rider will always ride faster!

Does anyone have any idea how low you can get the arms pads if I’m going to build up a set of S-Bends with Profile Jammer GT arm-rest clamps and with Hed Alloy S-Bends? I’m running Syntace C2’s right now and want to make sure I can them as low.

Thanks
