Messed up somewhere a week ago with running right after dinner and now every time I run I am throwing up in my mouth numerous time in a run. It occurs when air seems to move up from my stomach. What do you guys do? Should I not run for a couple weeks and let what ever it is heal? Or will it heal on its own. Looking to avoid meds, if possible. thx
When i had some acid reflux i just stopped drinking coffee in the mornings, avoided hot-sauce and any really acidic food (easy to find charts on the web) for about 2 weeks. I would drink simply apple juice and also pure cranberry juice before/after running. I took a tums before i went to bed. Problem resolved and i am back to my normal diet for the most part. I still do the cranberry and apple juice instead of orange juice. The orange juice/coffee combo is just lethal in the morning.
I just laid off the acidic food, and chewed two tums before and after each run. That cleared things up in a week or two.
Try a shot or two of Pepto pre-run. Works like a charm.
Thanks guys. I’ll have to try the cranberry and apple juice.
So tums while runnning helps to stop the acid from coming up? I guess I’ll have to do this while I am running than.
Without knowing what you eat on a daily basis, I can’t say for sure. I do know several people who gave up dairy and their acid reflux went away. Try added more alkalizing food to your diet
You really shouldn’t run within a couple of hours of eating. Exercise or lying down before the stomach has had a chance to empty will promote reflux of the stomach contents including acid and undigested food. The Tums or PeptoBismol simply buffer what comes up, they do not stop reflux.
Typical trigger foods include chocolate, coffee (whether decaf or not), tomato in any form, peppermint, spearmint. These typically reduce pressure at the lower esophageal sphincter which will facilitate belching and reflux. (This is the trick that restaurants use with a mint at the end of the meal to allow that satisfying belch.)
Large meals, protein, fat or fiber loads, or even large liquid loads increase the stomach emptying time–if it’s still in the stomach, you’ll get to enjoy it again when you exercise or lie down or bend over. Triathletes are more likely to reflux swimming (air swallowing and prone position) on the aerobars (position and increased abdominal pressure) and going hard (blood flow shifted away from the intestines and stomach emptying slowed).
For your situation, more elapsed time before exercise after eating and any antacid before you run should solve the problem. Tums is a good choice because you can always use the extra calcium.
A few years ago I had a big problem with reflux. I would just carry tums with me on long runs. Even in ironman I had some with me at all times. It worked well.
I have this problem sometimes, when I stopped drink soda it went away entirely. Sometimes creeps back if I drink beer too often.
Alcohol, caffeine, carbonation seem to all make it worse.

If I’m going to run after work , I make that I don’t have any chocolate after 3PM
Don’t eat greasy foods.
Chew mint gum while running. It works amazingly for me.
I have acid reflux and started using Braggs apple cider vinegar. (Same people that make the hippy soy sauce) A teaspoon in a glass of water 3-4 x a day. It has worked wonders for me in daily life. Haven’t tried it in a race yet but plan to

This. Vinegar seems counterintuitive but it works.
There’s likely another issue. Doctors have told me several times that stress doesn’t cause acid reflux… and then they write me a script for some pill that some pharmaceutical company wants me to take for the rest of my life.
I decided to learn how to manage the stress and throw the script in the trash. Guess what… no more acid reflux.
Started getting the acid reflux when pushing hard on the bike - I don’t run at all anymore. I take a prilosec (omeprazole) in the morning before riding and no more problem.
Hey man, I agree with what everyone is saying about acidic drinks and food. I also have experienced this problem from drinking too much during/right before. This happened with plain water, so it could be that you are over hydrating. Just make sure that you are fully hydrated well before you run. Same thing when racing, I would recommend over fueling on the bike a little bit so you won’t be ingesting as much during the run. Another thing is try to eat crackers, bread, etc. a little before your run to absorb some of that acid. Hope this helps.
