Ache in Hamstring/Glute from Seat Height?

Going through the Tour of Sufferlandria, being off the bike for a while, been fiddling with my fit. Aside from my sit bones being sore, which has improved over the past week, I’ve found something of an ache. Its like the equivalent of aching sit bones, but its situated off of the sit bones. The best I can pinpoint it is like my upper hamstring, or the lower part of the glute that goes into the upper hamstring. I hope that makes sense.

I record myself from the side view and decided to lower my seat about an inch or so. I did this because it looked as though I was toeing at the bottom of the pedal strike, or at least I thought so.

Is this aching just from lack of use and will go away? My saddle height possible being lower than it should be? Would you recommend lowering to see what the effect is and then going higher to do the same? Does it have something to do with a weak back?

Its not debilitating.

I’m getting this myself just now from what I think is changing my position. I lowered saddle 5mm and front 10mm. I also changed to an adamo road saddle.

I’m having a few aches and pains especially tight sore glutes and saddle aches I hope this is just getting used to adamo. Iv had no numbness at all which is nice but the other aches are a concern if they continue.

when you lowered your seat the inch did you adjust the saddle’s fore/aft to keep the reach the same? when you looked at the video from behind, did you see any rocking of the hips before you lowered it. It could be a fit issue, or as you said it may as well just be soreness from the change as your recruiting different muscles and need to get used to it.

I actually didn’t lower the fore/aft. I’ll move it forward just a tad and see how that goes.

I still want to think that its the muscles being recruited.

I should ask my fitter as well. Thanks for the tip.

if you lowered your saddle an inch you would have decreased your reach a bit. try sliding the saddle back between 1/4 inch - 1/2 inch.

I clicked send by accident before I finished my thought. if you were comfortable before you lowered your saddle, then you can get to the same position when you lower your saddle by rotating your body around the BB. ie. if you lower your saddle and inch and change nothing else, it will open your hip angle up by moving yourself forward over the BB more and by having 1 inch more height on the bars effectively. So to stay at the same hip angle as before, you need to move your saddle back between 1/4 inch - 1/2 inch (start with 1/4 inch) and lower your bars by about an inch. I just lowered my saddle by 1 cm recently as well so had to go through the same motions. hope this helps

Thanks Andy. I misunderstood, and moved my saddle forward about 1cm. Still ached, but not as much. I’ll try it with it 2cm back and see how that goes.

I’ve read some people turn their saddles to the left or ride. What symptoms would make you think or know that this would be better? One arm reaching shorter than the other?

2-1 odds it is due to tight hamstrings and hip flexors.

i do have tight hamstrings to start off with. thanks for pointing that out. any recommended stretches?

on the last couple of rides i did i felt some kind of a pinch but not pain on what felt like my left hip flexor.

That pain you are referring to is extremely common for people who do repetitive motion activities such as running and biking and almost all of the time it is due to tight hamstrings and hip flexors. There are several good stretches you can see live by just going on to You Tube and doing a search. It would be too hard to explain on here.

Do you do Yoga? Incredibly helpful if you are not.

I do not, but will look into it. My gym should have some kind of class to go to learn. Thanks!
