Looking for some experienced opinions here. I’m wondering how difficult it will be to get decent accomodations in Lake Placid if I wait to book in mid-June '06. I currently do not have an entry slot as I’m hoping to qualify at Muskoka.
I’m staying at the Crowne Plaza (nicer portion of the Holiday Inn brand), and they still have rooms for $239-$289 a night. Not a bargain for a Holiday Inn, but I don’t think that you’ll find a hotel anywhere near this nice for less money. They still have availability and are in the center of Lake Placid. The best part is that they don’t require a 5 night stay. Good luck in your qualifying race.
Good idea or bad, I’m staying at my parents place about 30 minutes away on Upper Saranac Lake. I won’t be able to walk out the door to the start, but I won’t be stuck in a hotel, either.
If you wait that long, you most likely won;t get anythin IN LP itself, but there’ll probably be rooms left in the towns nearby.
Did you try Lake Placid visitor’s bureau? 800-44-placid.
Also try:
-Schulte’s Family Lodge, (2 miles at most out of town) 518-523-3532
-Jack Rabbit Inn (4 miles from town) 518-523-0123
-Swiss Acres Motor Inn (1 mile outta town) 518-523-3040 - But go thru the Visitor’s Bureau for this one, they only make you pay for 1 nite, until May, whereas the hotel will make you pay in fullif you call them directly…
If you’re still not having any luck - I was told try everybody again around May. That’s when everybody has to pay in full, and some folks mite have pulled out of the race by then, for whatever reason.
For 2005, my sister decided at the last minute she wanted to come to the race and asked me to help her find a room. With 1-week to go, I was surprised to find that every hotel (Mirror Lake Inn, Crowne Plaza, Best Western, Hilton, and others) still had a room. Each required a minimum 4 night stay, but the rooms were definitely widely available at the last minute.
I’ve got a reservation at the Schulte’s Family Lodge. The location looks great, it’s on the bike and run course so that should make the wife happy. It also looks like I’ll get a cabin with a kitchen for less than $100. Now I’ve just gotta qualify!
Surprisingly, by mid June there are LOTS of cancellations. Tons of people book extra rooms for family members who bail out (I have done this myself in the past). You just have to do some work and call around if you are trying to find something in June. In any event, nothing is cheap.
That’s what I’m hoping for so that I can upgrade (even though it’s cheaper) to a cabin. In any case, right now I have a bed for less than $100 a night that’s right on the race course, and a short jaunt to Start/Finish area, I’m happy!
I was just looking at the web site for this hotel and it says it’s .5 miles from the airport. That could mean loud. Any chance you could post a quick note about the hotel if you do use it (I’m planning IMLP 2007)? Thanks.
basically the LP airport has few planes coming in or out and those are generally very small prop planes.
We stayed at Schulte the first year I did IMUSA and the cabins were nasty. I don’t know if they up graded them but the bed was worn out about 15 years ago and my wife wouldn’t step in the shower without shoes on.
Since then we have stayed at the Alpine Air on the other side of town. No frills but clean and the owners are great.
I’ve stayed at the Alpine Air twice, but neither trip was actually for the race. It’s nice enough and very inexpensive. On the bright side of it, it’s not on the course, so you can drive right back to the hotel after you finish without dealing with road closures. I’ve stayed at the Econolodge for the race which is on the course, but about a mile & change out of town. If you call the econolodge, you have to ask for Ron Brenner. It’s ~139/nite and require a 4 nite stay. Rooms are nice, but nothing to write home about. It has a bed and a shower with full tub, so I was happy.
i started booking hotels/motels for this past race in March of this year and it was already tight, and plenty of places were asking higher than average prices and wanted minimum 5+ days stay.
ended up staying at the Jack Rabbit Inn, which is on the way out on the bike, just a few KMs from town; there was a microwave & a fridge, which is all i needed; there’s a pool, and the place ain’t that bad; plus there’s a steakhouse across the street.
and you can always rent a house, but they’re up there at $2500+;
