? about Mavic freehub bodies

Does anyone know for certain if the freehub bodies they sell for Mavic wheels are the same for all 9/10 speed hubs, even the older ones?

I know with Zipp they have changed the hub design several times and when I needed a freehub body for an '01 Zipp I had a hard time tracking one down. I have an SSC SL that is from about '04 I think that I need a campy freehub for and I just want to be sure that the ones they sell now still work on this hub. I haven’t been able to find anything definitive online that says they do or don’t.

Thanks.

When I replaced my SSC hub there were no 9 or 10 speed options, you use the same hub for 9 or 10. I use my SSC for my crappy weather/training bike 9 speed and race bike 10 speed so I swap back and forth all the time, just have to have the correct spacers.
I think Shimano is the only company that makes the splines different so you can’t use their newer wheel hubs with 9 speed.

Mavic did make a recent change with their wheels. The original freehub design (which you would have) and they used for a while was the FTS-L. It used two pawls on the hub and a bushing on the inside of the freehub. They recently started using FTS-4 which uses bearings rather than bushing and 4 pawls on the hub. The two are not interchangeable. I believe the 4 pawl system was used mainly on the mountain bike wheels but I am not 100% sure on that. If you get a Campy FTS-L freehub you should be fine. Those freehubs thrive on regular cleaning and maintenance that most riders, alas, do not deliver.

Hi,
I’m not clear on the wheel you’re trying to fix, but freehub bodies are generally interchangeable between models. However, note this from our online tech manual:
Cosmic Carbone SSC has existed in FTS and FTS-L :

  • If the free wheel body external bearing is locked with a featherhead bolts (FTS), please, follow 2000 maintenance.
  • If the free wheel body external bearing is locked with a hexagonal nut (FTS-L), please, follow 2001 maintenance.

So, if you have a 2004 wheel, your freehub should be FTS-L. Design hasn’t changed and part number is M40591 for the Campy 10 freehub body.

To be dead certain, start with precise identification of your wheel. And, don’t hesitate to see your local dealer. they can visit the Mavic tech site for complete archives to 1997.

The post about new design is correct to a point. On the MTB side, in the mid-200s the FH body changed to “FTS-X” and now for 2012 goes to “ITS-4.”

However, everything on the road stays the same FTS-L.
best - zack

Man - now that’s service. Didn’t expect to get an actual Mavic rep.

The wheel is a Ksyrium SSL SC. It currently has a Shimano 10s freehub on it and I want to convert to Campy. I’m not sure of the model year. I got them on a used bike I bought in '06 and I was told they were a year old, but of course you never know for sure when you buy something used. Is there a serial number on there or something that will identify the model year? Or does it matter? Will any year for that wheel use the FTS-L?
