Okay,
So I have tried for two days to route front derailleur cable through my Sram Apex shifters. It just wont work. The rear cable went, so so after a few mins of wriggling around. The front cable just wont move at all.
Also I bought these super expencive Gore Professional cables. They come with an inner liner and the cables are (was) coated with something. However after routing the cable through the bend and plastic stuff in the sti the coating on the cable are coming off. I think its plugging the inner liner now, because the cable feels like it runs a million times worse than the 5 year old and very worn basic shimano gear cable it was supposed to replace.
ANYONE who have good advice on how to get that damn front derailleur cable through the shifter??
I’m not a bike fan of coated cables, for just that reason. As far as routing make sure nothing is clogging it up. You can remove the hood and take the three tiny phillips screws of the cover and see alot of the mechanism. Try to find cables that have only one end, not two where you have to cut one of the ends off. Single end cables tend to have the other bare end soldered so it doesn’t fray as easily.
Put some lube on it bend the end into a little bit of a curve and try again. The front is worse that the rear, it can help to be one click over in the front from the (basically the trim position.
I’ve heard the new red is much easier. It would almost be worth the $600 to not have to re string them.
Nope. I had the exact same issue with the new Red. It actually did turn out to be coating material off of the cable that was clogging the cable channel. Royal pita to clear. Working just fine now with non-coated cables.
I guess thats good. Good in the sense that it saves me from spending $600 just to make it easier to replace cables 2x a year. The bad thing is why? simply putting a window on the opposite side so it can be pushed straight through then turned and push uo the rest of the was should work. I trolling ebay to find a wrecked shifter just to disassemble and see if it can’t be simply modified.
