A Tradition Unlike Any Other

Hulk is the early clubhouse leader. Tiger is plugging along nicely. This year’s field is remarkably uninteresting.

Except that I have $40 riding on a few pics for the first time ever, so I’ve been following more closely than I have in several years. The extra coverage on ESPN+ that I paid $10.99 for has been welcome as well.

There is a fascinating long format read about Augusta National and the year that Tiger won his 5th Masters. It’s behind a paywall that allows one free read so click carefully if you are interested. Search “augusta national the new yorker”. From the tech of the course to the patrons of high and low class, to Tiger’s spectacular failure as a … errr… I don’t know. Great read.

They work real hard on the tradition part. The field selection is part of that tradition. Stories are made each year and subsequently retold. Hoping my home boy amateur gets to write his story with a positive spin.

Still looks like bikini wax features prominently.

Just watched Theegala take 3 pitches from about 15 yards before he got one to stay on the green after spinning his second back off the green. A man of the people right there.

JT, Hulk, Scheffler, Koepka, Reed, Rahm - now that’s a murderer’s row of warm milk! Speaking of warm milk, the honorary starters all looked pretty good, with the exception of Jack.

He was definitely the least spritely of the 3 however I just learned he is 84… I would have put him at 78 so I think he is doing pretty good.

-EDIT TO ADD-

Well Damn! Gary Player is 88. Incredible!

Gary has a deal with the devil to look and act that spritely at 88. Jack on the other hand, sad trombone.

Hulk is still hanging in there.

Interesting around the top of the leaderboard. Homa and Morikawa pushing Scheffler. Scheffler with double bogey and bogey, then coming back with an eagle.

Tiger has fallen off a cliff today. Cool to break the record for most cuts made, but he’s clearly out of gas. 10 over par just in today’s round.

Moving day, but the leaders just seem to be moving down then back up… could be a big shoot out tomorrow. Unless Scheffler birdies 17 and 18 to take a big lead.

DeChambeau has also had a bad day. Looked like he completely lost his feel on the greens, and now he’s getting a little wild off the tee.

And just as I say this, he holes out after having to scramble out of the trees to get a stroke back.

That was great! I think he probably played his way out of contention with the 75. The winner most likely will come out of the final pairing. I’m pulling for Morikawa to get the 3rd leg of the career Grand Slam, but I also really like Scottie so I’d be OK with that as well.

Do they only ever have three honorary winners tee it up?

Do they wait for one to pass before bringing in another?

Presumably next in line would be Faldo. Mickelson and Tiger thereafter?

Scheffler is definitely the favorite but if I was a betting man my $ is on either Morikawa or Schauffele.

I was just about to say that I couldn’t hear the fake birds, but here they are!!!

I think Zach Johnson made it a touch more interesting while walking off the 12th yesterday.

JC it’s annoying as fuck.

Almost as annoying as Jim Nantz

Almost

I’m sure he’s working up his cheesy exclamations for the finale as we watch

“There’s no place like Homa?”
“Something something struck an Ã…berg” < or work some other Titanic reference >

The tradition of the tournament always lets me know that spring has arrived. The mechanics of their swing, and the science of the equipment make me ready to play again.
But year after year, and 4 days of every commentator gently washing, rinsing, and blow-drying the balls (not golf balls) of the tournament and it’s self-aggrandized aura gets phony after Thursday.
I think that the “patrons” heckling Johnson got exactly what they deserved in 12 gallery. I found his response refreshingly human.
