Flippers? Surely that wastes more time than helps

I bet/hope that every racer have done both time trials and longer sessions with and without equipment to figure it out. I’m also surprised to see flippers so high up in the race, pretty unorthodox (if one can claim an orthodox way of racing swimrun yet).

What a weird event. heh. I like the dog leads.

It’s a wonderful, back to the roots endurance competition style. A wonderful mix of orienteering, OW swimming and adventure racing.

About swimrun:
It started with ö till ö a little more than a decade ago, when a few guys at Utö (todays finish) made a bet that the last guy to get to Sandhamn by his own steam will pay a night of drinking for the others. The 4 guys decided to go in teams of 2 for security reasons and went on.
Later a former adventure racer and race director was asked to create a real race of the crazy bet. He took the challange and after a few slower years everything just took off. For some reason this just happend to happen while a huge boom in endurance sports happened in Sweden and plenty of people wanted to race this crazy event.

These last 3 years the number of competitions in Sweden has exploded and the format has expanded to other countries as well. It’s simple to understand why, anyone who tries it LOVES it! It’s simple, extremely hard (I once did a 7k swimrun-run portion at 10-15 beats above threshold HR) and the team format makes for a new experiance.

The rules are simple. Every team must complete the course which is marked with ribbons. Team members must not deviate more than 100m on land or 10m in water from each other. For equipment the rules are really loose (floatation devices must be smaller than 100x60cm) but everything you bring do the start line, you must carry to the finish. Ropes, paddles, fins, pullbuoys, bladders, goggles are not compulsory, but shoes, the race bib, wetsuit (allowed to be cut) and cap is, as well as a map, whistle, first aid and a compass.

The races are as much adventures as they are actual races. Its crazy tough but racing in the swedish archipelago is wonderful beyond imagine.

It’s interesting that their coverage is a lot better than any WTC race I’ve ever viewed online. WTC could learn from these folks.

That is AWESOME coverage! Thanks for queuing me in!

This is brilliant, Brits Fraser Cartmell and Andrew Fargus in 9th place !

Fantastic coverage, very well done especially taking into account the terrain.

Who needs energy gels when you have Twix !
