A storm is coming

Might be a good time to stat making preparations. Last I checked we’re expecting ~18” snowfall and ~-3° temps here in the Commonwealth. Should be fun digging out at 0300 Monday for my weekly commute.

Nashville is projected to get snow on Saturday and Sunday. They have differing opinions on how much (2-10”) but the issue here is that we don’t have that much snow clearing equipment since it rarely gets used. And all of the hilly roads. They do a pretty good job of clearing the interstates and a couple of the main drags, but any of the neighborhoods, forget it. The other issue is when the snow melts and and then refreeze overnight when it’s cold, so you have a layer of ice underneath the snow.

Bottom line, it’s too early to tell whether we’re going to get freezing rain and sleet or snow. But it’s like likely we’ll get something.

meh.

We’re supposed to get half an inch by Sunday morning. 4.5” on the ground. And we’re supposed to be warmer than NYC - Saturday is supposed to be coldest at a high of 14. Yesterday was colder!

8” forecast for Sunday. Depending on timing (supposed to get another 3” Monday) there might be a school delay Monday.

Another good week of nordic skiing in the city!

We had this issue during a freak storm. We got something like 6’ of snow in 48 hours. On a normal year we might get 6” of snow all winter. The city owned one snow plow at the time.

Neighborhoods weren’t plowed for weeks. I think schools were closed for 3 weeks. By the time plows came around, most residents had banded together and dug out the streets by themselves.

All of that over 6” of snow? Seriously?

When I lived in NC we got maybe an inch or two of snow and shut everything down for a couple of days. It seemed ridiculous but I guess when you’ve got no salt, no plows and few with experience driving in the snow it freaks people out.

Make sure you run out to the grocery store to get milk and bread!

6 FEET of snow. Our usual snowfall is 6 inches.

To make matters worse, after the snow stopped we had freezing rain, so the top of the snow had a rock solid 2-3” on top.

We were taking crazy carpets and sleds down hills and it was like a bobsled track due to the ice.

I read it as 6 inches the first time too.

6 feet is a lot no matter what. You can’t plow that out, no where to put it. That would be fun for a day or two, after a couple weeks of not being able to go anywhere I might get a little bored.

Ah, ok, my mistake there.

6’ is legit Armageddon for sure.

The boredom was the best part, IMO.

It got people outside and brought people together. What’s there to do today? Nothing? Perfect. Put a kettle on the wood stove and read a book for an hour with nothing else to to and nowhere to go. Total silence outside from no cars.

If you were amongst the unlucky who had their roof collapse or were without power for a week, that’s a different story.

Please send our way!!! Zero snow in Utah. For those of you who get slammed…stay safe.

No problem, you’re from Kansas

Gotta have those milk sandwiches!

Do you not have a snowblower?

You’re in fucking Canada…couldn’t somewhere else in the Province lend you trucks for a week?

A couple years ago I was around Williamsburg, VA visiting family. West of Richmond they were getting snow, an inch or two. On the drive home we saw zero plows between Richmond and DC so it took hours. Maryland, don’t remember. Pennsylvania looked like it wasn’t snowing.

Single digit temps heading my way, not much snow. The AFC Championship is gonna suck. High of 25 and cloudy, and no Bo Nix. Sorry Bronocs fans who buy tickets, your day is going to be lousy.

The logistics nightmare this created was insane. We are on an island. It was like a week or so before we could even get enough staff to the ferry that is the lifeline for goods and services to run the boats. The nearest city, Vancouver, was slammed too, and any help beyond that was coming over some pretty formidable mountain passes that were closed or compromised for a while due to the storm. Getting anything anywhere was a major challenge.

We eventually did get some help from a small city up island but again it just took a while for them to dig themselves out then send additional resources out way.

I have a diesel tractor with a bucket.
