Does anyone have a good explanation for the nationwide shortage of handgun ammunition? And handguns for that matter? I was at a Turner’s Outdoorsman this weekend and they were rationing .45, .40, .38, 9mm when they had it. They had signs up claiming that there was a nationwide shortage, not just in SoCal. Other than a couple from Sig and Para-Ordinance they had no handguns but were happy to tell you when it might arrive.
Is this an indication that the masses are less than optimistic about the President’s comments about supporting the 2nd Amendment?
My husband and I don’t own a gun and I don’t want one in the house. I don’t want to go into why. But, he is worried about Obama trying to prevent him from owning one and I have a feeling this argument will come to a head in my household very soon. People are buying them for the same reason he wants one. They want a gun before they aren’t allowed to have one.
Wow, so record numbers of gun nuts? Charleton Heston must be smiling up in that big shooting range in the sky. To quote DEVO from their first album; “Too much paranoia”
Ask that to the op, he’s the one posing the question to the “gun nuts” not me. No, gun nuts are folks who sit around worrying about how the government is going to come in the night and take away their god given guns, folks who sit around rambling about their constitutional right “to bear arms” without really thinking about what that amendment is talking about. Folks who lie awake at night wondering if they can be quicker on the draw than the bogeyman house invader that will likely never come. Those gun nuts.
I tried to buy my hubby some ammo for Christmas and everything he asked for was sold out. I was told that it’s because people are afraid guns and ammo will be taxed up the wazoo soon and everyone was stocking up here in Texas. I told my hubby he needs to take up triathlon. The potential gift list for this sport is never-ending.
FWIW, he is not a gun nut. He’s the popo. If bad guys break in to our house I’ll have to throw my aero bottle at them as a deterrent. We don’t keep guns at home. Sounds like some of the posters here assume that just because someone is purchasing a gun or ammo they are interested only in enforcing the Castle Doctrine. Not necessarily true!

Combination of gun owners or new buyers who fear that Pres Obama will act to restrict gun and ammo sale, and people who fear that the economic downturn will result in increased crime.

I think there may be a basis in fact for the belief in increased restrictions. There is legislation working its way through both the state and federal systems requiring the serializing of all ammunition and sale databases. How does this square up with the campaign promises not to go after guns?

It’s not really new. Ammo (particularly .223/5.56 and 9mm) has been in relatively short supply for several years. Most, do to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s been exacerbated by the election of Pres. Obama and the democrats. “Gun nuts” tend to be a reactionary lot, and have reacted by buying guns and ammo. New gun buyers are also coming out in large numbers. I wonder how many gun shop owners and manufacturers are going to be voting democratic from here on. Under Pres Bush, my local gun shop always had plenty of AR/AKs on the shelves and lots of Glocks/Sig/HKs on the shelf. Now, not so much. I’m not sure if high end guns sales have increased but low to mid level certainly has.
Because although he probably can’t “come after my guns” about the best he’ll be able to do is tax the hell out of the ammo. That’s true of federal and my anti-gun state. With raw material prices still going up (copper), it only makes sense to stockpile as much as possible. Enough people figure that out, and supply just can’t keep up.
The local Walmarts have started limiting people to 3 of the 100 pack WWB and they still sell out the same day they come in. I happened to be driving past Wally World the day before election day and figured I’d stop in and pick up my allotment. The lady said “I don’t know what’s going on, but I don’t want to be there when it does”… funny.
If you find a good price on what you need, stock up now because I can’t see how ammo prices will ever go down in the future. And don’t get me started on reloading. My time is better spent working or training.
The average citizen with a pistol permit is scared sh_tless that Mr. Obama is going to out-law all guns. Do a yahoo search and you can see the proposed legislation. It seems Pelocci (sp) is sponsoring most of it (surprise) My father is in Alabama, my brother in N.C., myself and my other brother in CT are having real issues finding ammo. We have resorted to ordering from a very large dealer in Phili. Locally (for all 4 of us, in 3 different states) can not find .45, 9mm or .380 or anything else for that matter. When we can, it has gotten very expensive.
We may also be scared that he is releasing the terrorist from Cuba and releasing prisoners.

Immovable object, meet irresistable force.
On one hand you have The Agenda; the complete emasculation of America. OTOH you have the Cold Dead Fingers, some of whom deserve to own guns, some of whom don’t.
Me, I feel I’m most likely to be injured by the gun I store in my own house, so I don’t. I was raised around them, indoctrinated about gun safety, and respect those who handle them well.
But people can’t seem to control themselves anymore. Too much road rage. Too much domestic violence.
Pardon me while I expose the root (many really hate it when I do this), but our institutions now advocate self-expression at seemingly every turn, rather than personal responsibility and self-control.
This issue isn’t going away. And those who can’t possess firearms responsibly will ruin the argument for those who can.
