A man's watch

So, I’ve looked for the watch threads, which I know there’s several good ones, but I can’t find them. Regardless of finding them though, I think I still need some guidance beyond finding some other brands to look into.

  1. I would be ok with spending upwards of $4,500.

  2. I want a new watch. I do not want a used watch. I do not want a used Submariner.

  3. I would prefer something different than an Omega.

What should I look at? Buy online or from a reputable dealer?

If you can get a cheap flight to London (assuming you are based in the US) go to the Swiss Watch place on regents street. Because of the weakness of Sterling as well as duty free you will be able to pick something up at almost a 30% discount to buying it here.

If it was me I’d get the Rolex milgauss. (Green)

If you are unwilling to buy pre-owned, you are really limiting yourself. Watches are like luxury cars - lightly used provide huge discounts while appearing new.

But, if you are stuck on new and with your restrictions:

I feel like finding a used one would be more time consuming. I mean, you want to see a used watch in person before buying, no?

Do you know those other threads?

I started one of those threads. Try searching “JSA watch.” I have posted in the other watch threads, including reputable sites for online purchase. I have purchased pre-owned online. If you hit a reputable site, you don’t have to worry.

Thank you. It’s funny; “men’s watches” gives 42 pages of results, but in fact, there is a thread with that title even! Found the threads I was looking for.

You know, I never really got the appeal of nice watches, but some of those watches from pita really, really catch my eye. Still way more then I would want to spend on a watch, but, if I were to get one, I would strongly consider them as I really like their style. Very cool.

Dsw.com (edit: Should be “www.davidsw.com”…not some cheap shoe store)

You’ll never regret it. Look around, email him, discuss what you’re looking for. I have bough numerous Rolex from him and have never regretted it. You will regret buying new on this. Shit, nowadays you can get used WITH THE PLASTIC STILL ON. Literally, people buy a new one, get buyers remorse and return to a dealer. The dealer can’t sell easily, so they have people who sell on the “grey market”. Look there first.

I have a small luxury watch collection I have been building up over 25 years. I’ve bought most of my watches used from people I have never met, involving units of which I have only seen pictures, where I was often transacting overseas in a foreign currency. It’s pretty simple, find a message board of use a reputable sight like Chrono24. On the message board find the guys whose lives are wrapped up in the community and the brand, they would never screw you over because it would mean being outed forever – sort of like lying about your IM time. I also really like ebay if you can find the model you want. Prices there are good and there are many ways to gain surety over the transaction.

I’m thinking of getting a big fancy medallion to wear around my neck.

Antiquorum

I’ve a Aquatimer I want to get rid of

New limits the quality of the movement and watch you’ll get at that price, I’d not get an Omega, if you do not want a sub but are willing to look at other Rolex - daytona or yachtmaster may be options - I’m not a huge fan of the Sub, I went with a sea-dweller

I bought an Omega new - was absolutely fine until the first and only time I took it diving - came back up to find it full of the indian ocean - Omega were a little obstructive, in the end they would not tell me what the cause was, they just sent me a new watch from switzerland - I was explaining this to the guy that services my watches and he told me that in 40 years he’d only ever sent one Rolex back with a manufacturing fault where the case cracked due to an imperfection in the forging - he’s seen far more Omega’s go back…

I’ve bought from Antiquorum three times - easy to deal with

Alternatively - good online dealers

Nothing like talking about expensive watches…and cheap shoes.

Again,

If you’re willing to go used, I got mine from HQ Milton - a guy named Jacek (pronounced “yasek”). Great guy with a stellar reputation.

If you get decide to get one from him, PM me and I’ll give you my name so you can tell him I sent you.

I would definitely recommend against buying something you have not seen in person…at least the same or a very similar model if not the exact watch. Watches are difficult to photograph well, look different on your wrist than in the case, have different weights, clasps, band flexibility, etc. I strongly feel you have to handle a watch to judge it.

$4500 will get you anything you could need in a watch except snob appeal of some of the higher end brands. In fact you can probably find a $800 watch that ticks all the boxes, so I’d start there and make sure you know what you are paying the extra $3700 for.

Ever pick up a watch?

I thought I had my watch picked out, a Vacheron Overseas. I’ve been obsessing over it for a while but never tried one on. No dealers anywhere even close to me. My wife and I recently took a trip to Atlanta and I finally had the opportunity to see it up close and personal and I couldn’t wait to try it on. Put it on my wrist and all I thought was meh! Not the watch, it was beautiful just didn’t look or feel right on my wrist. So I crossed another watch off my wish list.

Ive never really wanted a Rolex, seems like every Tom, Dick and Harry has one so I never really looked at them until last week. I tried on a few but the Datejust 41mm smooth bezel black dial with stick markers just looked and felt ridiculously good on my wrist. I think this may be my watch, 7k new from AD 5ish on gray market…not sure which way I want to go yet. Only $1500 more from AD with warranty.

WTF. r u ppl serious?
