i’m in cincinnati, and would be willing to travel south, and east coast. for west coast i’d really have to think about it, but it’s highly unlikely…(the 4 or 5 hour flight tends to be too much for me, as I get air sick and have a hard time recovering…not good for racing, but for the right thing i would try to overcome this)
Brooklyn 1/2 Marathon. A great race. First two miles are on the Coney Island Boardwalk (wooden slats. very neat and a different feel from pavement). Then 7 miles up Ocean Ave. (flat, but usually windy). Then 4 miles in the very, very beautiful & hilly Prospect Park. Race is usually mid-April. Afterwards, go for lunch at Patsy’s for some great, great pizza.
Cincinnati! I love that place. Why don’t you do the Flying Pig? I ran that in 2004. One of my favorite marathons. That’s probably too far off for you. What about the Miami half? I think it’s in Jan. Atlanta has a few. If you’re interested I could send you a list of some local half marathons.

Columbus Distance Classic - Capital City Half-Marathon EVENT: ROAD RACE LOCATION: Columbus, Ohio CONTACT: 614-288-5829
These are both driving distance for you. I signed up for the first one before, ended up volunteering because of an ankle sprain. Seemed like a well run race. I don’t know about the other, I just checked the race calendar.
Fast and scenic course, reasonable number of runners, good race management, and normally good running weather that time of year. Only caveat is that it’s a bad course if you have IT band issues because the course runs along the tertiary dune line for several miles and the road grade gets pretty noticible.
Not all the way to west coast but we do the Canyonlands half in Moab in March. The race is limited so it doen’t get too big. It is very well run and the run along the Colorado river is beautiful. The weather can range from nice to warm (mid 80’s). http://www.moabhalfmarathon.org/halfm/halfm.html
Okay, if you want to stay local, then do the Indy 500 1/2 on the first Saturday of May. I have my 3 fastest 1/2 times on this course. It is flat as any half you will find and in the middle, you get to run on the Indy 500 track.
If you are willing to travel, then nothing will beat the Austin 1/2 on the 2nd Sunday of February. The course is super fast and nothing is better than the city of Austin for restaurants and bars…if you are into that kind of stuff. A bunch of us from Cincinnati went down last year and had a blast.
Though it is a little before your scheduled time the 3m half marathon in Austin, Tx is well supported, a good course, usually good weather, and fast. One of my favorite races anywhere.
