I have upgraded to a new bike but I am also keeping my old bike. I need to replace the chain on my old bike and have never done this (I know I’m horrible). I don’t need top of the line but where can I find a good deal on a good chain for a 10-speed Shimano 105 set? Does it have to be Shimano brand or are there other good affordable options out there that will work with a Simano 105 10-speed? Any help is appreciated.
Bump. Where do you guys buy your replacement chains?
shimano or sram 10 speed chains will work well. I’m sure there are others.
I prefer the sram. It has a link in it that can be popped up and closed easily for removing, cleaning, etc. You have to use a chain breaker for the shimano.
I think the shim 105 or sram (rival level) chains retail for around $40-50.

Where do I buy chains? Nashbar, ebay, performance, whomever has best deal on sram or wipperman chain. I kinda favor the wipperman because the removable link is reusable. Shop, see how much quality you want to buy. Got my last 10 sod sram at LBS and it was only about $40. If you put too many miles on that old chain, you may need new cassette, or at least the big cogs (e.g. 23, 25t). You’ll know if new chain slips on those.

Thanks for the replies, but that’s just it: I don’t know what makes a quality chain. What should I look for exactly? I can find a replacement for a stock Shimano 105 set for about $35 (Shimano brand). Is that a good deal or should I be looking for something better for about that same price? I’m just not educated when it comes to chain quality and brands and hoping you can share some wisdom.
Amazon has the 5600 10 speed 105 chain available for $29.99.
Thanks for the replies everybody. I actually found a great deal on eBay on a Shimano 105 chain (I think it was $27 with shipping), it’s in the mail already.
I usually buy KMC chains off of Ebay.
You got a fine chain. For future reference, all the main brands mentioned above are fine. You just need to match number of speeds you have (though 10 will work on 9 and 8 as well). The only practical difference between each brand’s offerings is weight, the less weight, the more it costs. Note with the chain you bought, you will need a chain tool to cut the chain to length (make it the same as your old chain, or look at parktool.com for sizing directions). You will the chain tool to insert the pin into the chain. That is not really complicated, but if you’ve never done it before, I’d recommend you get someone with experience to do it – it needs to be done right, if the pin is not pushed in far enough, or too far, the chain can break.

One of the best deals I’ve seen.
When I can’t find a deal, I buy this chain:

I’ve ridden them for about 40,000 miles now and have had zero issues. Zero. Not one. They’re $25 reliably and are probably a bit heavier than the SRAM or Shimano chains, but they’re also half the cost of the Dura Ace or SRAM 1091 chains.
