If you add a valve extender to your spare, and you have different depth front and rear, make sure your spare has a valve extender long enough to work on both or … If you have a disc then a standard tube, already taped at the thread, with a separate valve extender for the front would be the way to go.
I always carry a spare valve extender. They are light, small and mean that you can use other peoples standard length spare tubes if required.
For a 90mm I think I use a standard 48mm valve mated to a 90mm Zipp extender (they have a nice ridge at the tip to grip the pump). But it is a bit long. Zipp lists the following sizes for each wheel. I assume they base the lengths on a 48mm tube valve. If you don’t use the list below and work out your own length also bear in mind that a flat tube can let the valve push inside the wheel by 1 or 2cms when you push the pump onto it so don’t go for a super low profile, give yourself a few cm comfort zone.
From ZIPP SITE
Available in:
• 27 mm (1.05") for older (red) 202 wheel sets.
• 33 mm (1.3") for 303 and new 202 (32 mm profile) dimpled wheel sets.
• 48 mm (1.9") for 404 dimpled wheel sets.
• 72 mm (2.9") for dimpled 808 wheel sets.
• 98.26 mm (3.9") for dimpled 1080 wheel sets.
I have 60mm in the front and a 90mm in the back. So I buy 80mm tubes and add a 30mm extender for the rear and the spare.
Just ensure that that the combined length is (at least) 20mm more than the wheel depth and you are good to go.
I have a 90mm rear wheel, I use a 80mm tube with a 30mm Topeak valve extender…
The Topeak extenders allow you to close the presta valves without removing valve core, some people have even suggested it’s good to close the valve then remove the extender altogether, so you have no valve protruding from the wheel.
