very surprising

Yep. But Tyler did his part.

definitely…well, except for the 4:00 penalty
.

Well, it wasn’t the ankle

:04 PM Kimeli showed heart out there… We just spoke with the lead bike escort who said Kimeli was running fast through half-way before “hitting the wall” at the 17-mile mark. He fell into the bike escort’s arms and did not respond and begin running for 7 to 8 minutes.

Still the result would be the same. I am betting that the RD is jumping for joy knowing that next year there will be another race - and more of us type A folks there trying to prove who the big boys are. Shows how brutal that course really is.

"more of us type A folks "

And even some of us more laid back type B’s. All of a sudden Silverman rises to the top of my interest list for 07.

Yeah, after all this hype - I’m definitely putting this race on my to do list. I hope it hangs around for a while. My wife wouldn’t balk as much with a race near Vegas and I like to suffer

If she does balk - I would be happy to introduce you to my mom…you could go to the race, Vegas and REALLY suffer the ENTIRE time

So when does the WTC come out with IMLV (November time frame)?

“So when does the WTC come out with IMLV (November time frame)?”

WTC and any other RD/Race Managment group should take notice though of what Silverman did and that’s generate interest and hype by not dong the the same-old-same-old, which SO MANY other races try and do. They did something different, it’s caught the interest and intrigue of more than a few and they seem to be on somewhat of a roll.

There is so much that you can do with this sport. It amazes me how and why so many events just try and do the same old thing that has been done time and again. Example: In some respects, there was more interest in Silverman this weekend than in the 70.3 “World Championship” the day before.

70.3 what?

hey Fleck…does this mean you want to join a team and do Multiman next year?

i agree. this race was full of excitment and suspense. i could not leave my computer for the updates (and humor) from Slowman. much more interest than yesterday’s race. i can not believe how difficult this course is. the Age Grouper’s are having a tough day. i think next year, if the prize money is on the table again, it will bring in 10 times the interest. someone will break 8 hrs.

Fleck,

I wish you were right - but 300 paying athletes vs. 1800 isn’t “more interest”. It’s unfortunate that good races like Silverman have to go up against the WTC jugernaught but hopefully they can schedule a date next year that doesn’t conflict. I would REALLY like to see a Challenge Roth event here in the US - but that might be a few years off. the more support we can show independent events like this the more likely it is that the Challenge people will look this direction. That would be good for triathlon and good for the consumers. hopefully they were watching today!

I agree, in terms of absolute numbers 70.3 is way ahead. But give and event like Silverman some time and, I can see this really growing. It’s a great concept. An event has to start from somewhere. The key difference is the Silverman has set it self nicely apart with a key differentiator from all of the other independant races, that more or less try and do the same thing that the WTC and IMNA/NAS do already. Nothing wrong with what either of those organizations does, they do an amazing job, but why just copy what someone else is doing. You are almost doomed to failure if you go down that road. The track record speaks for itself.

i agree with you on both counts - 1) Silverman needs to grow and 2) IMNA does a good job. To be honest my concern with IMNA is that overall more Ironman races doesn’t necessarily help our sport. I was talking about this on my ride today - I know at least 5 people who did IMWi this year with no intention of doing another Ironman and maybe even another triathlon - they didn’t do well (14.5 - 16.5 hr finishers) and probably didn’t have much fun out there. So - they haven’t really added to the sport of triathlon and ultimately will do one event and leave the sport.

I would love to see more events that encourage growth in the sport and encourage more people to get into triathlon. I like Ironman and I do one or two a year - but I would hate to think that eventually the general public will only see Ironman as a “check list” event and not as part of triathlon in general. I’m just assuming here, but I would guess people who do non-M-dot events are more apt to do more triathlons and are doing it because they want the full-distance experience not because they want to say “I did an Ironman” and move onto something else.

" I know at least 5 people who did IMWi this year with no intention of doing another Ironman and maybe even another triathlon. "

I think that’s probably because their only goal was to “do an IronMan”. I’ve also known people that have done an IM and then it’s adios to the sport. Sort of like “mission accomplished, proved I can do it and now I can go back to being sedentary.”

In contrast i know others that have been doing local sprint tris for over a decade and are still enjoying themselves and staying healthy and fit.

But give and event like Silverman some time and, I can see this really growing. It’s a great concept.

A race course that is so hard that probably 30 - 40% of the people who sign up for IMNA events could not finish? Based on only one AGer breaking 6:00 on the bike, the bike leg is probably 45 minutes to an hour slower than IMLP, for the fast people. I just don’t see 13 and 14 hour IM people (a big piece of IMNA business) doing this race. Vegas area sounds like a great venue, but the course needs to be easier. I am curious to see what the DNF % will be for this years race.
