You know, $115 entry for an Olympic isn’t a bad price, if you take into account that it includes a cycling jersey. It beats a t-shirt.
Probably only 6-8 Americans will be invited to this race. Without looking up the rankings now, they would be Potts, Kemper, Jared Shoemaker, Brian Fleischman, Mark Fretta, Doug Friman, Matt Reed and Joe Umphenour.
I was wondering why it was so dang expensive. I now see the jersey on the website.
BTW, if you haven’t registered yet, it’s $140. And another $10 if not by May 31.

Sounds about right to me. If anyone is interested this might give you a better idea of who from the US will be there: http://www.triathlon.org/docs/rankings-itu-points-men.pdf?ts=1178641244
And let’s not forget the AG prize purse:

Not bad money there either…
I’ll be participating in the citizens race but have no concerns about prize money…just sweet, sweet schwag. I’m volunteering on Fri-Sunday as well, should be fun. Sunday afternoon I will be working the finish line for both pro races. Could be cool. I will try to get pictures.

“On June 17, 2007, athletes from around the world will gather in the heart of the American Midwest to compete for the largest prize purse in triathlon history: $700,000.00. Join us for the inaugural Hy-Vee ITU World Cup in Des Moines, Iowa — and be a part of history in the making.”
i thought Life Fitness had that honour?
LifeTime Fitness Triathlon had a $500,000 total prize purse the last couple years…Hy-Vee now has the largest total prize purse.
ah, for some reason I thought it was a million. Thanks for the clarification…
EDIT
I knew there was a larger one…
I can’t tell in that article. Is it $1.5 million for the Dallas race, or $1.5 million for the series of races.
Combined prize purse for the whole series of 5 races…
ah, it’s my selective reading abilities gone awry.
I’m sure that’s part of the reason why it’s written that way… Last year’s total series prize purse was around $1 million, so the new US Open race added about $500,000 to the total.
Another question. How do they get to use the US Open name? Doesn’t USAT have to sanction that? Maybe they have.
I don’t if USAT had to approve the name, but it is a USAT sanctioned race…
I meant the name “US Open.”
.
I assume if it was a problem, USAT wouldn’t have sanctioned that race. I don’t know why USAT would have necessarily owned the name though…seems like a great choice of name either way.
I thought nothing ever happened in Des Moines!
Besides the $200,000 cash to the first place pro male and female, they will also get a H3 Hummer.
