$70 for a sprint?

Is this high? Or is it just me??

that’s becoming an average price for a sprint. I’ve paid more…

Okay.
I wasn’t complaining, just curious

To me, this race is worth it. Very well run race…

it depends on where you live. $70 is a bargin in the mid-Atlantic area.

You can sign up now for the San Diego AG ITU race next April for the special price of $140-Sprint, $199-Olympic.

low to average.

There are only a few things I’d pay $70 an hour for. A sprint triathlon ain’t one of em;)

I’d say it was a bit high. Or higher than I would pay. There are plenty of sprints around here that are higher (like the ITY San Diego) but I don’t sign up for them. Instead I race AG in the local college circuit where most are $50 or less and are very low key.

Just you - seems low to me.

I feel the same way. Around here the price went from $40-$50 a couple years ago and now $80 seems to be the going rate. I need to tap into my 403B just to get a couple of races in this year!

Around here, in Dallas, that’s a little high, but not unheard of. You’d better be getting a lot of course support for that cost.

Because of the costs, my Tri team has started informal races once a month at a local park. They say “go”, and time you…but after that you’re on your own. They’re getting popular, but when a few people started to bring some of the usual anal-retentive attitudes about timing and course issues, we simply remind them that it’s free and you get what you pay for, and to suck-it-up-buttercup-we’re-not-here-to-wrap-you-in-a-warm-blankie.

I work for a pretty well know org that puts on road races and since I have been on the other side, I have been surprised how much it costs to hold an event. I am also surprised tha smaller races even turn a profit unless that have a really good sponsor or sponsors providing in-kind or cash for costs. It is a tough business and super competitive.

That being said, $70 for an hour and change is hard two swallow. Add my wife to the mix and that is a weeks worth of groceries for us.

Go slower…

Here is a bit of the other side of the story. My little triathlon in Ontario has the same price up to Olympic regardless of distance. My fee structure is $55, $65, $75, $90 depending on when you sign up. Race day is $90 and it is much higher because it is such a PITA.

Now, I get around 400 registrants. My costs to put on the race are 24k. That comes out to $60 per registrant. Sign up early for $55 and I lose money. I could certainly do it cheaper but there are many reasons why the costs are so high - prize money, inner city closed roads, great food, 200+ volunteers, well run. We are affiliated with the local Boys & Girls club. Basically we try to break even on registration fees and any garnered sponsorship goes directly to the charity.

I guess my point is it is not cheap to put on a quality event.

Just looked at my last bill for a sprint and it was $81 with active.com’s fees. That included a $20 gift cert. at Trek, free event photos (action and finish line) and a tech tee. I had a blast at the tri and have absolutely no complaints about that whatsoever.

Getting to that price, it would have to be very special for me to want to pay. Races in general are just jumping in price. There was a 5K race here last weekend that was $60 and in the summer a 5K fun run untimed event for the same price. Now you get a bag of samples to try and disguise the fact that the cost is kind of crazy.

At this point I will be doing quality races and not the quantity I have been used to doing. So if it is much above $50 it better be great.

I saw $70 and thought it was low. I think I usually pay $90-110.

In Western Canada usually around $60-$70 for sprint & $100-$110 for Olympic.

I’d say on avg. in AB I pay $90…

$90 average? That means you sometimes pay $100 for a sprint? Haven’t looked at 2013 prices but that sounds high. Come race in BC my friend.
