70.3 Worlds roll down

Hi,

Just curious on average for the 45-49 AG and the 50-54 AG what would be an average roll down for 70.3 worlds? Whats realistic to expect?

For any North America race for 2018 WC, if you want to go I think all you have to do is show up to awards.

Sean is correct.

In Raleigh the 30-34 slot went to the 47th place finisher…and three other slots were not taken at all.

Really? I didn’t realize that it was so easy to go…thats a bummer, it has always been something I wanted to do, but without earning it, does not seem worth going.

The Male 50-54 rolled down to 20th at Raleigh. My buddy grabbed it. He had done Galveston prior and said there were quite a few people grabbing spots. Raleigh was opposite; said there was nobody at awards wanting spots.

I think it is all about location. Last year when it was in Chattanooga I heard most races/ big AGs didn’t roll very far. I may be exaggerating, but I feel like you had to go under 4:30 to get a spot at Muncie last year.

Same as ITU Worlds. When it was in Chicago, things were pretty tight. Not as much for Auckland.

So when can you qualify for 2019? After 2018 is complete? Sounds like to do one in North America its top few but other places abroad its very attainable…next year is Nice France, wondering if that is also going to be a popular one…

I would have to agree that it is the location this year. I personally have no desire to travel to South Africa for a half ironman race. I am willing to travel to Nice, France though for World’s next year. I have not heard where the 2020 70.3 WC is going to be held.

Most people would probably agree with you but I am 180 degrees opposite. After doing IMSA last year, going back for the WC was a no-brainer. But I have no interest whatsoever in going to Nice. They haven’t announced the 2020 location yet. Maybe in Sep after this year’s race?

In Gulf Coast 70.3 a few weeks ago, the third 50-54 AG slot rolled to 48th. I was at the awards and coulda gone. But I passed. If the race was anywhere in NA or Europe, I would have considered it. Booking a flight to South Africa was not in the cards for me.

I could have grabbed a slot in Raleigh…and if it was for a Nice, France slot I would have. I hope people pass on Nice, France as I doubt I am going to be going sub 4:30 this year. Heck, I will be happy with a sub 4:50 at AC.

I think edinburgh was announced as one race where you could qualify for both (or either, if you wish) which seems pretty cool. Roll-down will be confusingly fun to watch. Anyway, every race after Jeju is for Nice.

I do remember some deep roll-downs for Chatt when it got to the 3-4 months prior, although there were tons of slots at some races as they weight it to the region (for example, Syracuse had 75 for Chatt with very deep roll-downs). I imagine Nice slots will be hard all year long in North America because many seekers will likely skip South Africa to wait for Nice and the trouble is it looks like most NA races will have 30 slots so basically 1 per AG with 2 for a handful. Nice is much more attractive a location for NA racers. Since I can’t make top ten, I’m banking on my wife scoring a slot so i can eat foie gras and baguettes all week as a spectator.

Nice will be more popular than South Africa but the same pattern will exist:

  1. It’s much harder to grab a slot early in the qualifying cycle when the folks who most want to go are already gunning for them.
  2. Getting a slot in the older AGs can be much tougher - kids are grown, generally more resources, and only 1 slot per AG. They don’t roll deep when you hit 60 … especially if it’s early.
  3. If the WC is outside of the country, planning the logistics and finding available hotel space can be difficult when the race is less than 3 months away – a primary reason why they roll so far this time of year.

Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to a return to trip to Addo Elephant National Park and some new sights I missed when I raced IM South Africa last year.

At Eagleman 70.3 rolldown yesterday I would say that at least 75% of the age groups ended with the question of “Is there anyone from the (insert AG here) age group that would like to go to South Africa??? Anyone??? Anyone??? Buehler??”

There were a few AGs with significantly more willing parties than slots, and it was interesting to watch them try and reallocate all the slots that went unfilled on the fly. I think the majority of folks who wanted to go got slots, except for one poor guy in the 50-54 AG who kept going back up to try and grab one every time they reallocated and they kept telling him to stick around…

In Monterrey the last 30-34 AG slot was grabbed by the one hundred sixty something guy… He basically was on the last 5 of the category. It is all about location, going to South Africa is pretty expensive. Last year for Chattanooga there was no much roll down. But as most have mentioned, the earlier in the qualifying period, the harder to get a slot.
