How many slots for worlds are typically allocated to a 70.3?
I know for 140.6 races they say in athlete guide how many slots there are total, but I don’t see it anywhere for my upcoming 70.3

30 or 40 depending on the race. Slots are shown here:
In the past, they would show the number of slots on the main page for the event just after the main description. It was a sentence like “St. Jude IRONMAN 70.3 Memphis offers xxx slots to the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.” However, it looks like most of the upcoming races either omit this sentence entirely or just say they offer slots without stating how many.
My hunch is the number of slots is more dynamic because of cancellations and reschedulings. So, they just don’t bother maintaining it on the website anymore.
Because so many races got postponed to the fall, we are overloaded with 2022 70.3 qualifying races. Therefore, I would expect 30 or fewer slots for most races. OTOH, that may be offset a little by the fact that 2022 may still largely be a North American event due to uncertainties around race hosting and travel restrictions.
yes same as Kona, 2022 WC race must be almost sold out already due to deferrals, so the new normal is just 30 slots. Which means most age groups you are required to win. So really almost no point of trying.
Hahahah so what you are saying is:
“it’s hard so why even try”
Quite the defeatist mentality
.
Super helpful.
Thank you!
I am trying in Weymouth 70.3 next week! I am usually a top 5 finisher and recently KQ with a 5th in my age group, and I’ll have to target top 2 I think. I am realistic, it’ll be quite hard, but believe me I’ll try
Good luck!
I’m hoping to creep into St George 2022 via the back door - I took a Taupo 2022 slot from 70.3 Staffs - 6th in AG with 3 slots (insured it just in case) - but with that cancelled we were told we’d have ‘options’ and I’m expecting that the ‘offer’ will be St George 2022 or the new Taupo date, probably 2024.
If not, back to Staffs next year…
Well that’s just a bit too negative. A race with 30 slots will likely give out anywhere from 2-4 slots per AG from 25 to 54 or so. More slots where there are more participants. You also have to think about timing and maybe even region. If it’s early season, the slots are less likely to roll down. If it’s later season and you live somewhere that has a decent number of 70.3’s then the slots might roll down a bit more. Mid to late season and you’re in a place like the northeast where there aren’t a ton of races then you might have a lot of people who need qualifiers.
Of course winning your AG is one way to get there. If you’re often times in the top-5 or 10 of your AG then being intentional about race selection might be the difference of getting in or not.

FWIW, at Timberman there were 2 slots in M40-44 from 30 total slots for the race. I got 4th, was not expecting to get a slot, but this morning I got an e-mail prompting me to register (race was August 22, so these things take a while!). I’m going to think about it, but not likely to sign up, so this will most likely roll to 5th place or beyond.
Thanks! In the UK they have now started again the excruciating in person roll down ceremony on Sunday night which means a long drive back in the early hours for most…trust that’ll be enough for slots to roll down even further….

A 30 slot race won’t have anymore than 2 slots per ag. 26 of those slots are automatically dedicated to ag winners which only leaves 4 slots to allocate.
