I’m planning on doing Wilmington, NC 70.3 this October and looking for feedback on how spectator friendly this is? I’ll have my wife and 4 children so be honest. It appears T1 and T2 are about 10 miles apart if I’m looking at the map correctly… If so, how are spectators getting around?
Is any 70.3 Spectator Friendly? Then add 4 kids…
You can watch them finish the swim, but you’ll need to park about 1km away and walk to that. Then you can drive downtown and park to watch them finish the bike. There are places to walk to watch them run. Downtown Wilm has several restaurants that you can stop in while waiting, some good breweries and whiskey spots for after the race as well.
Having 4 kids tell your family to stay at hotel (if it’s downtown) and just wait for you at T2 and the run.
The swim start also is like 1.5mi from T1. So they’ll be miserable as hell not recalling knowing when to expect you and can only see you at T1.
The swim spectators are locked onto the island (there is only 1 road out) until the last biker basically so they can’t drive the likely at min half hour (or more) to get back to T2 quickly.
Thanks for the input. Yea I would have to agree to just let them sleep in and they can look for me at T2, on the run, and the finish.
Hotels are crazy expensive with large families so airbnb will be our best route somewhere close to T2. I’ll just shuttle T1 and the swim start.
