70.3 in rainy, cold conditions

Hi everyone,
I searched for this particular topic because I thought that there was a thread about this.

Doing 70.3 tomorrow in rainy, cold conditions (think temps high 40’s low 50’s). Any tips? I can stay warm in wetsuit and water should be manageable.

Thinking of rain jacket on bike. Possibly gloves.

Thanks!

Wisconsin?

If it does not get cancelled, get some plastic trashbags and put then under your jersey on the bike. Wear disposable garden gloves and a rain vest if you can get one. Two pairs of socks if needed.

I’d carry one trashbag on the run just in case it starts pouring - you can always fashion it into a jacket and run in it. It will keep you warm.

Rain jacket on bike would be like pulling a parachute. Put some of those ironman plastic bags under you singlet, bike with swim cap underneath helmet, and gloves. I also like to tape my bike shoes vents shut with duct tape…that really helps!

You can do like big Matty Reed and race in wetsuit but I think that was a sprint tri!!!

Gloves for sure if it’s that cold; wet + wind on the bike = fingers so numb you can’t access your nutrition and then you have a sad.

Happened to me, still not over it.

put your running socks & shoes in a plastic grocery store type bag so they are dry starting the run.

Harvestmoon?

I thought of this too I think it was Boise 70.3 and quite a few pros did it

DNS

Go to a pub, order a couple of pints and a pile of chicken wings.

Thank me later.

Cold conditions= wind vest/ shirt. Gloves. If still cold, arm warmers.

If it is pouring, rain jacket as well. Otherwise, the above should work (has worked well for me in the past and i get cold easily)

Hope this helps

IM Louisville 2018 (43° and rainy) taught me that, as obvious as it sounds, it’s better to be wet and warm than wet and cold. My experience is that the water usually finds its way in, so all I can do is work on the warmth. A tight base layer (UnderArmour) worked wonders for me, essentially functioning as a wetsuit on the bike. I didn’t personally use a rain jacket over top, but it strikes me as a good idea. Gloves are a must for me, & boot covers can be helpful too.

Only other tip would be to know and address where cold hits you most. My fingers go numb before I even feel cold elsewhere, so I packed a hand warmer so I would stand a fighting chance at changing a flat.

Best of luck!

This was at Calgary 70.3, but the bike was considerably shortened.

Gloves and arm warmers for sure. Run socks and shoes in a sealed bag

Rain jacket only if you’re there to complete not post your best time
