7-Speed Cassette Installation

I was hoping someone could answer a question for me. My son has a 7-speed mountain bike (Trek with Shimano Tourney components). I needed to get him some new wheels so ended up picking up a Vuelta Zerolite MTB Comp 26" Wheelset. I ordered a 7-speed Shimano Cs-Hg20 cassette (12-32t) and since the wheetset is 8/9/10 speed, I got a 4.5mm spacer. However, when I tried to install the cassette on the hub, the cassette does not seem to fit. I did not want to try forcing the cassette on the hub - should I? I kind of expected that it would slide on.

Thanks

I’ve looked up both parts you described and it appears they should work together.

Perhaps a picture of the hub body and the splines on the cassette could reveal some issues.

On many Shimano cassettes, there are rivets or bolts that stick out slightly on the back side of the large cog. If the spacer does not have notches for these, the cassette won’t fit all the way on the freehub. If this is the problem, just file notches in the spacer so that the cog fits flush against the spacer…

Here are some photos of the cassette (front and back) and the hub. Issue I am having is that I can’t even get it to begin sliding on. As I said, I didn’t want to force it (rubber hammer?). Thanks for the assistance.

Are you getting the cassette lined up properly on the freehub? There is one spline on the cassette that is wider than the rest, this needs to line up with the wider notch on the freehub. Other than that, I can’t think of anything that would prevent the cassette from sliding on…

I’m an idiot…I just realized that one of the notches is offset. There was a bit of grease covering it up and I did not notice it until I was looking at the photos. Thanks again for your time and help.

That was the problem. There was a little grease covering up that spline and I totally missed it. Thanks for your time and assistance. Definitely helped me from losing my mind.

No problem

Sometimes you just need another set of eyes on your project to help realize the issue, even when you realize it yourself.
