650c wheels in pro cycling?

This is a random question, and one that doesn’t really amount to a hill of beans, but I was looking at Cervelo’s catalog this afternoon and was noticing that for the P3 the 2 smallest sizes are only available in 650’s. So then I was wondering if any of CSC’s riders are riding 48 or 51 cm frames, and then that got me to the question in the subject line. It seems like for a pro team it would be annoying to have to deal with different wheel sizes, but if the P3 can only take a small wheel, then what do their small riders do?

Uhlrich ran 650s in the Tour on the mountain stages a few years ago. It happens, but not a lot.

I was wondering the same thing. They must use the same wheels in a TTT, so were they all just big enough to use the 700c versions?

One of the big 650/700 issues is replacement wheels. Radies can switch wheels during races if they flat and 700s generally are all that is available. Ken

I guess I could’ve looked at this before I posted, but most of CSC’s riders are all about the same size, around 180cm (except Sastre), which probably puts them in that 54cm and over size. Oh well.

The whole availability of the 700 wheels is what kinda got me on this train of thought in the first place. I was just thinking how terribly annoying it would be for a little rider like me to have to deal with an entirely different wheelset and then hope that I don’t flat or anything… but then again there’s not close to a remote chance of that because I don’t possess near that level of ability to really be in a places where I should be considering such things at all

This is only a problem with neutral support in races like USCF. In the pro ranks, the neutral support has both sizes (the teams would make sure). In other cases, the team car would provide, and they would certainly have both if their riders had both.
