Title says it all, do you think it’s possible to bang out 6 watts/kg for 20 minutes without being juiced?
Ummmm maybe… the pros throw down kinda near that for 70.3 splits maybe 5 watts/kg, so I think a natty might be able to do 6 for 20min

I held 5.1w/kg with a caliberated SRM last year before I got my pro card.
Absolutely. The ability is limited to very few people in the population but we routinely see this level of performance by several grand tour contenders and climbing specialists on mount top finishes. I recall seeing some interesting articles which posit that anything beyond 6.4 for 20 minutes or longer would be suspicious but others have suggested that 6.7 is a more reasonable threshold.
Twenty minutes well rested, yeah. At the end of a hard stage in the middle of a stage race, I have my doubts.
There is a world of difference between 5 or even 5.25 and 6.
Incidently, an ex-pro cyclist who used EPO and transfusions told me he got a 7-8 Watt increase for every point of artificially increased hematocrit and a 10% increase in power was easily obtainable with EPO within three weeks. Effects last six weeks.

New low level pro here. Probably could do 4.8w/kg. I would guess most of the guys could do a good 5w/kg, upper level guys would be closer to 5.3-5.5.
Thinking about getting to 5.2 w/kg just makes me sad right now. Long way to go.
5.5 watts / kilo for 20:00 as a pro triathlete should put you close to or into the uber biker category. Depending on actual weight and Cda.

Depends what we’re talking about, but uphill on a road bike, I can assure you that many good amateurs are capable of 5.2 w/kg for 20’. On the flats in the TT position would be more challenging, but shouldn’t be a problem for any “real” pro.
Jump on Zwift, there are guys all day every day doing laps at 6-7w/kg

I have not had a power meter for that long but I figure my all time best 20 minute in the last couple years is right at 5 w/kg. There are plenty of clean amateur cyclists that ca n drop me like a bad habit on a climb, so 6 seems feasible.
You should probably consider what an athlete is capable of doing before and after that 20 minute effort. I am ruined, whereas a pro will be able to do multiple efforts at or near that level.
Andy Schleck once said that in the winning move of one of the classics he was putting out only something like 450 watts on the climb. His point was that an amateur cyclist could do that, but not after 150 miles of slogging through the Ardennes.
Thanks man, I was hoping for a better final day but those spaniards wore me the f out! I may have been able to pull 6wkg for 20 min but i needed to do 8 wkg for 3 min and that wasn’t in the legs anymore

Very much agree…when I went 20mins at 5w+ it was uphill TT. I’ve done 6w/kg+ for 5mins a twice, it was a lot ‘easier’ on an uphill (wasn’t planned- just a smashfest between a few team mates) than an all out velodrome TT

Alex Dowsett was putting out between 405-420 watts to lap the track at 17.3 seconds, depending on air pressure. That is 6 w/kg at least for an hour. Supposedly these guys don’t really start to hurt until about the 35 minute mark, so they could go 6+ for 20.
I did 5.45 W/kg for 17.5 minutes in an uphill TT as a Cat 4. I didn’t even win. Same W/kg the next year in Cat 3 and I barely cracked top 20.
