6 months post stress reaction

I had a stress reaction (not fracture) in August. I was on and off excecising for 2 months post diagnosis. Then I took 6 weeks of complete rest. I slowly came back late December with a run/walk program and easy biking. I had no pain or discomfort. I was able to build up to 30 mile running/week this week. I noticed that I had some discomfort in the area of the stress reaction (it feels more muscle but same area). Is this normal? I plan on dropping the mileage down this week.

Care to elaborate where this “stress reaction” was? Distal tibia? Metatarsal? Hip? It is common to feel a stress fracture for many months post healing, but should be pretty pain free by 6 months (especially if a stress reaction vs. a true stress fracture on MRI I assume you had).

The weird thing I was fine until now.

Femoral stress fractures are pretty uncommon in runners (not unheard of, but unusual). But they do generally heal well if caught early. Likely something in your gait/muscle imablance leading to your issues now (or possibly before as well). Since most runners have weak glutes/hip flexors, can start looking there at PT or with a good running gait analysis as well.

Pardon my hijacking, but I’ve always wondered how it is that running can’t seem to strengthen the glutes and hip flexors since they are so key for stabilization. Is it because there’s not enough resistance?

Fair question! “Weak” being a relative term - we mean in relation to the much stronger quadriceps for example. Not “weak” like your grandmother

Do you think the stress reaction can back? I thought it would be stronger since stress fracture/reactions heal stronger. Its not sore/hurt to run. I just feel it maybe 2-3 hrs after running.

It’s possible. A stress reaction might not build up the same bone “callus” (callous?) that a fx does.

Up your CA intake.
