5th Metatarsal pain, no fracture but tear of Peroneus Brevius now with MRI report

Yes, it is a partially torn Peroneus Brevius tendon. Came off my Comptrainer following a training session the second week of March 2012, sat down, changed my shoes and then for some reason turned to the right instead of the left and “wacked” the lateral portion of my right foot on the base of the Comptrainer. I was stunned and needed to sit down again to rub my foot. Did so for 30 seconds or so and continued on with life with the thought “it will go away”. Base of 5th metatarsal developed significant point tenderness but no deformity or discoloration. Continued with my run training on a treadmill that really did not hurt running but afterwards developed a burning sensation more posterior to the base of the fifth metatarsal. April 11, completed a 10 mile run on the treadmill with the increase of burning sensation following running. This sensation would also develop at work when I was rising up on my toes, doing lateral movements. Sleeping on my right side was not possible due to pressure on this location. Decided to back away from running for two weeks. No change. Appointment made with local Podiatrist. X-Ray at end of April reveals no fracture. Given oral steroids and review by Physical Therapist in which the manual foot tests were negative. Questions raised on what the problem is. Two weeks later I was given a steroid injection at base of 5th metatarsal. Got ultrasound from Physical Therapist. No change. One week later, another steroid injection and a couple of additional ultrasound treatment yielded no improvement. MRI performed on the 24th of May. Returned to the Podiatrist who stated I had a partial tear of the peroneous tendon and needed to be immobilized for 4 weeks. I got a boot on but can swim and bike if no pain is present.

I will have to see how fast this mid 50’s person heals.

Yikes, biking-not all out–on my Comptrainer is causing pain. I got to stop biking now in an attempt to promote healing. Healing that could take 4 or more months.

Not sure what you are looking for - but a bump for you. Perhaps others will give you their experiences in training through since that appears what to be what you are doing.

Not quite sure of your diagnosis since a longitudinal tear of the peroneus brevis is not usually caused by “bumping” it (more common with an inversion ankle injury or overuse injury), but healing vibes your way …

Here is the MRI report with personal/professional identification missing:

The report appears “not too” serious. However, I have a very sensitive area on the base of the fifth metatarsal where the tendon inserts. This sensitivity worsens with …yes bike riding on the Comptrainer, attempts to rise up on your toes, lateral movements. This sensitivity decreases when I avoid these activities. I was trying to ride and swim thru this issue but it looks like the only way to correctly heal this is to stop riding my bicycle activities. Swim as much as I tolerate. Find alternative activities (kayaking?) that do not stress this area. My Sportsmedicine Chiropractor is indicating multiple months of restricted activity. I go in to see my Foot Doctor (former Athletic Trainer) later this month. I’n not interested in making this a pernament injury or issue and will restrict myself to avoid this. 2012 competition is a no go and will have to look towards 2013.
